Having been in the UK for close on 4 years now, a common comment is the accent I have. Geez, I've even been told I sound like an American by some dumb :smiley35: .
Anyway, as of late we've been in contact with somes mates back home ... and man, I can really "hear" the accent now!
What do you guys think of our accent?

Good thread started. Likewise I would love to keep my accent but alas it is weaker until the next time I catch up with mates. Its just too hard to keep explaining words like 'lekker' and "just now' so I just drop them and adopt ozzy saying like 'it gives me the shits' which to me meant I have diaorreah but over here means your cross (what the???). Makes life easier unfortunately. Ozzy girls do like an acent though so can come in handy. (only the ones who have not been overseas and lived with saffa's/Zims and are sick of it). This forum is good for just hearing some expressions I have'nt heard in a while so keep it up guys!

People are morons.
Shit, I'm so confused, with all my mates all over the world. I hear they have an accent from the place they live. They tell me I sound so america, but who the hell are they to talk, shit man they sound like pommies, aussies, rocks. The list goes on, and they are ripping into me about sounding american. Cracks me up.
Americans think I have an accent, they always ask me if I'm from Britian or Australia.
I've gotten so tired so explaining to people here where the continent of Africa is. When they have grasped that concept then explain to them where Zimbabwe is. And they can't grasp what born and raised in Zimbabwe means. They still think I've traveled form England to live in Zim. F@#king idiots I tell you.
Then if they grasped where Africa is, and Zimbabwe, and they know what born and raised in Zimbabwe means, I explain that I'm not the only white person born there - that there are actually tonne sof us that were born there.
The geography lesson was hard enough I don't even attempt to get into the history of the migration of the british to all over the world. I'm actually just thankful that they can say my name. Who though Kirsty would be difficult, but these yanks always come up with Kristy, or costy or some stupidness. So I mangle their names on purpose when they butcher mine the way they do.
Then I get asked "how long it took me to learn english". IDIOTS. My accent sounds british and you ask me how long it took me to learn english. My goodness. The idiot questions never end.
I want to hit their heads with a brick when they ask me to speak English because they can't understand me. I am speaking f@#king English you yankee arsehole.
As you can see I have a lot of pent up rage concerning thsi topic.
So I'm confused becasue American think I have an accent, yet my friends say I sound American. Well, what the hell is it then?

I am trying very hard to keep my Zim accent, but on my recent trip to NZ, it was made quiet clear that it is slowly slipping. I did notice the NZ twang creeping into a couple people in NZ also.
We need to arrange a "Back to Zim week" once a month across the world

(hope you get this jist), tho when i got to zim all this pommie shit goes away and i got back to the gold old zim slang and shit. 'innit bruv'. I must admit my accent has had a few women on there backs in five seconds all i siad was 'hi' two hours later i had here take-away, my pizza and was a down a condom, fare trade I say. :smiley36: :smiley2:

Zim accents are the best. I remember my mom repremanding me on occasion for sounding like a "Scarp."
Having lived in the US for such a long time - I perk up when I hear someone from Zim talk. How I miss that familiar sound.
Last week I had a conversation with someone about accents (of course) and he is studying them - he said once you have reached a certain age (15-18) you will always have your original accent. Long ago I read something, I think it was about Rhodesian accents, is that people who grow up there are greatly influcenced by the African languages they are exposed to - that also makes the accent unique.
Have a great day and I hope I run into one of you so I can hear you speak.

I love my accent...even though I know it sounds something similar to a Saffa one, and I kinda accept the fact I'll always be called one, supposse I cant gripe too much seeing as I have a Saffrican passport and Saffa heritage (now try explaining that to the poms!!!).

ZIM ACCENT RULES...SEXIEST IN THE WORLD!!! Anyway I have a bone to pick with the Pommies, Zim is bigger in land mass than England by a long shot and the accent is more or less the same through out Zim. In England you drive down the road for 2 min and you cant understand a word they saying the accent is so diffrent, they have a huge range in accents for such a small country I will never understand it.
I have had the stupid quesions and statments from the pommies..."you cant be from Africa ..you not black" at that point I just want to clup them. Then the normal crap, " how long did it take you to learn how to speak English" ect ect...I have worked with some girls for 2 years I am always talking about Zim yet they still say I come from South Africa I have frog marched many of them to an atlas to show them..they still find it very hard to grasp. I worked with one lady who said to me she had always wanted to own a rhino as they are so cute, when I stoped howling with laughter and asked her exactly how big she thought a rhino was she pointed at about knee high (I could not belive it). Same woman was asking about the snakes when I started rattling about the diffrent ones and she asked about the diffrences I said some are back fanged and some are front fanged, she asked why they have fang's I asked how she thought the poison went into the blood stream and she said with the thing that flicks out their mouth, YEAH RIGHT!!! How did we survive without running water and electricity. ECT ECT!!!
Last time I went back to Zim we went to Matopos National Park and I got a photo of a mud hut, a bit old and neglected but a standing mud hut with a roof on. I then convinced the pommies that is how we started out when we left home we had to build one of them and had to work our way up to afford running water, electricity and brick walls, to keep the lions and elephants out and a hell of alot of them fell for it hook line and sinker.
They can be a big bunch of Idiots!!! But it is sometimes alot of fun. I have no intention on loosing my accent if I can help it! With me, What you see is what you get.

I have a pom accent... with a slight zimbo one that escapes when I am in the company of other zimbos...
Spent my formative years in the UK due to pappy dearest having to gap it due to getting involved in security force stuff that led to certain gents in Land Rover Sentanas being very interested his/ our affairs....
Have a tape (remember those) of me as a lighty talking and I had a proper boer accent of note....
I personally love the zimbo accent... but, as already mentioned... the Irish one is a killer on the ladies.
Had a big debate with my little cousin from Mvuma many moons ago.. she was about 14 at the time and a complete farm girl, she was adamant that I had an accent as did anyone else from outside Zim... but people from zim, including herslef, didn't have one as she / they spoke normally.. ??
Moral here.... never argue with a teenager...
