That is me in the blue train

We managed to get it running in 2005. They were all disassembled for maintenance 10 years earlier and never put back together. The steam trains were far more complex, so we never managed to get them running again. The 2 photos of the steam trains were taken in the 70s

Bulawayo is a one horse town and the donkey kicked it out and then died. Its the easiest place to get around. Honest, I went there in 1990 and was forced to go back in 1998, still the same and finding anywhere that is worth a mention is easy.

I went to boarding school in Bullies and other than that I only ever went through on my way to the Falls. Once we stayed in a caravan park and twice we stayed with family.

Loved Bulawayo - the people, the structured roads in the town, Eskimo hut, Matopos, the early morning marching sounds heard from Brady barracks, the more relaxed atmosphere, and most of all, the many a school holiday I spent there.

Sigh.

Remember these:

I remember those in Bulawayo. I don't think that the Greenwood park train in Harare was anywhere nearly as good? Bulawayo was/is the "railway capital" of Zim. Has anybody been to the Railway Museum?

yeah, we went there qute a few times.
We really loved that train in the park! I think we nearly made my folks broke insisting on going on it! I liked the park all round, it was awesome!!

Yes, I remember too! In fact, years ago, when Round Table used to run the train at weekends, I had to phone the volunteers to remind them of their duties. Eeeuch, that goes back a few years!!!! ;)

The Centenary Park is nowhere near its former glory. The lawns are brown, the fountain hasn't functioned for a while, but Bulawayo IS BEST. You guys from Harare haven't a clue when it comes to hospitality and friendliness, that's what we're known for - not bambazonkie-ites!!!

When I was at ZECCO, we actually refurbished two of the old coaches for the Bulawayo Railway Museum and two for the railway museum in Livingston. We had a few Portuguese, ex RR coach builders who certainly new their disciplines. What could not be bought, they made by hand...

Memories... :smiley19::smiley19::smiley19:

.I went on several trips round the railway museum, trying to get an idea on what a steamtrain should look like after it was assembled, this still didn't help me with how it worked though.

As for the "Bulawayo is best", I can but only agree, did both the Harare and Bulawayo tours and certainly Bulawayo was the best. That's why I moved there.
