Jonathan Kaplan has been appointed to referee his fourth Absa Currie Cup final. He was appointed to the match just ahead of Mark Lawrence who refereed the 2007 final.
Are you going to be at the Absa stadium in Durban this weekend for the clash between the Sharks and Lions? Send us your fan pics and videos and win with TopFan.com.

Andre Watson, South Africa's manager of referees, said that it had been a most difficult appointment as there was little to choose between Kaplan and Lawrence.

The matter was referred to the SA Referees' executive and to Mr Oregan Hoskins, the president of SARU, for a final decision after the referees' selectors could not decide between the two.

The view of coaches was also taken into account before the executive took the decision to appoint Kaplan.

"This obviously gives a very clear indication that both gentlemen, who had refereed superbly throughout the year in all competitions, deserved to referee the final,” said Watson. “Mark Lawrence will be the official reserve referee should Jonathan not be able to referee the game.

"Both referees are worthy of refereeing the final, but, and unfortunately, only one can referee can do so."

SA Referees expressed their best wishes to Jonathan Kaplan for the final and to Mark Lawrence (Sharks v Xerox Lions) and Craig Joubert (Vodacom Blue Bulls v Vodacom Free State Cheetahs) for the semi finals.

It was also announced that Shaun Veldsman has been appointed as the television match official for the final.

A shark could never beat a lion unless the battle took place in water. Lions, pound for pound would be stronger than a 98.2% of sharks - dependant on the shark on course. A great white could arguably compete with a lion in a fight to the death match. However, one could argue that sharks are solitary as opposed to lions who hunt in packs therefore nullifying the previous statement. Hunting techniques, stealth and speed are dimissable and irelevant to the argument.

Therefore, I'm going with Lions.

its been 12 long years, the wait is finally over...surely!!

can you believe that certain people in South Africa reckon Earl Rose should be playing 10 for the boks!! When you have serious talent like Morne Steyn, Francois Steyn and Peter Grant playing awesome rugby you wanna pick a div that cant tackle!!

Man of the Match: Stefan Terblanche (Gallo)

Durban - The Sharks were just too good for the Lions as they cruised to a 29-14 victory in the first Absa Currie Cup semi-final at the Absa Stadium.
The coastal franchise were just unstoppable in the first half and that laid the foundation for their comfortable victory.
The Lions certainly came to play and battled gallantly but ultimately they never really looked like upsetting their hosts who started the first half like a house on fire with scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar slotting two earn penalties to hand his side the early momentum.
Then in the 14 minute, it was No8 Ryan Kankowski who was on hand to ensure it was also the Sharks who scored the opening try of the semi-final.
Receiving a pass from winger JP Pietersen he sprinted 40m down the left touchline to dive over for a great try, Pienaar slotted the conversion and the Sharks were 13-0 up.
Mercifully, there was a reprieve for the Lions not long after, with centre Doppies la Grange going over in the 19th minute to score the opening try for the visitors.
However, the Sharks immediately bounced back with flyhalf Fred Michalak finishing off a beautifully orchestrated try.
The Sharks' utter domination continued until half-time with both centre Frans Steyn and Pienaar slotting a penalty each to take their side into a 26-7 lead that they maintained into the break.
After the hustle and bustle of the first half, the second stanza got off to a pretty lacklustre start before Pienaar slotted yet another penalty to extend the Sharks lead once again in the 62nd minute.
The Lions tried and tried again but they just could not penetrate the Sharks' seemingly impregnable defensive lines but they did eventually manage a late consolation try as centre Jacque Fourie went over in the final minute.
Strydom kicked the conversion but a 29-14 defeat will be a bitter pill for the Lions to swallow, meanwhile the Sharks can bask in glory.
Try scorers
Sharks: Ryan Kankowski, Frederic Michalak
Lions: Doppies la Grange, Jacque Fourie
Conversions
Sharks: Ruan Pienaar (2)
Lions: Earl Rose, Louis Strydom
