View Full Version : School war cries?

Do remember school war cries. We used to have to practice them during our Friday break times before Saturday 1st XV games. If you forgot the words the Pre's and Seniours would A beat the shit out of you with ties and pieces of toast or piss bombs (war cry practice held on Pre's lawn just in front of senior comms, scary place to be as a junior, with all the seniors smoking and shouting at you from the walls!)
Masakati makadii this is what we've come to see
Dragons fire, Dragons flame, Watch Saint Georges win the game. WAH!
C...O....L...L...E....G...E.
COLLEGE!
I sure I'll be able to remember them even with Alzheimers, they were drilled into my brain at such a young age!

Thats a pretty cool home website. The old boy network must be excellent. Notice a lot of Rhodie element maybe. Website run by Salisbury press Melbourne. Heh?
Anyway anyone remember PE's war cry at rugby. They were our biggest rivals at Saints but never really understood or was intimidated by this one..
Inky Pinky Ponky Ah Yeah!
Ponky Died Donkey Cried
Inky Pinky Ponky Ah Yeah!
repeated over and over. Anyone old PE boys any insight what that meant?

The Guys that did that were seen as sell outs hey? Got paid $100 bucks to have years of abuse personally and at the school. (I suppose that was alot of money then as a school boy). Remember also that Saints is the school where 'Power of One' scenes were filmed so there is good too. (In fact about the only time our school got a lick of paint ha ha!)
P.S shayne did your school have any original war cries that it didn't steal from evryone else. If so put keyboard to forum!

Geez blokes i havent had such a good giggle in YRS...funny the emotions a warcry evokes even after all these yrs...i was very fortunate to have coached my old school 1st XV & enjoyed some special moments on & off the field with some WONDERFUL youngsters, including warcries in victory & even after the odd defeat (we lost 6 games in Zim in 5 seasons) I must confess, as an old boy of the Zim schools 'system' i thoroughly enjoyed hearing the warcries of the opposition schools, ESPECIALLY the 'big five' if we excluded ourselves (Hut, Tigers, Saints, Falcon & 'gundi)...was even more pleasant after collecting their scalps of course! The beer in the school pubs just tasted better afterwards!

Heres one that used to drive fear into the hearts of opposition schools. Any non St Johns school goers should not read this as a panic attack may brought on. You have been warned.
*Entire school stands and forms a strong green bond.*
*Head war crier stands in front, concentration in his eyes*
*Sweat glistens the brows as the college boys wait in anticipation*
Head war-crier: raises hand
Entire school: "Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"
*Silience. Wind dies down. Birds stop flying and perch*
Head war-crier: "SAYYY WHAAT???"
Entire school: "SAY SA KABUNGA WAH"
Entire school: "WIDIKA WIDIKKA, WAA CHA CHA"
*Head war-crier pauses, takes a deep breath*
Head war-crier: "CHOVA!"
Entire School: "CHOVA!"
Head war-crier:"MOTO!"
Entire School "MOTO!"
Head war-crier: "CHIPENGELE!" (SP??)
Entire school: "CHIPENGELE!"
Entire school: "WAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
*Wild cheers and whistling. Touched parents wipe tears from their eyes. Opposition school sits in silence, fear gripping their faces*
Can any St Johns boys out there confirm spelling for me?

This was our school anthem sung at all masses before school break/ holidays
MEN FOR OTHERS
Men in Work and Men in Play
We shall not flinch nor fail
For Hartmann hill breeds Brave hearts more and more.
Come the monster in his might
Our Faith is lance and mail
We flee no foe and fear no ill
Saint George yet rides before.
We flee no foe and fear no ill
Saint george yet rides before.
It was quite stirring with all 800 boys packed ionto the Chapel shouting their lungs out as we knew that when the song ended we were all free on holidays!

Its "CHIM'KELE"...which is a horn, symbolising strength... translation would be something along the lines of "move/ destroy with fire & gore the enemy" (using the horn of strength)
The one that REALLY brings a tear to my eye, goosebumps to my skin & moves me is the school song "St John's- the call"...imagine 500 youngsters together in unity- i think the tie that bound all the greenboyz together & made St John's such a great school so quickly was adversity- a school that rose out of nothing, with EVERYONE & EVERYTHING against it, the only thing we had as pupils, parents & staff was each other & a steely determination to stand up & be counted...as a College old boy, one of my enduring memories as 1st XV coach, which i will never forget was the founder governor of the College board of governors coming & hugging me in tears at the end of the season when we stuck PE 49-6 on Jubilee, Peterhouse 40-13 at 'hut', Falcon 46-12, Saints 58-3, 'gundi 48-14, Plumtree 49-17, Churchill 40-13...his exact words were "i can now die happy- everything we did & went through was worth it"...i guess it must have been like seeing your 'baby' grow up & become a man/ woman...
St John's- the call
"Sing it out St John's, sing it loud & clear, sing it out for all to hear.
Past & present & those to be, steadfast in our loyalty.
(ch) All for one & one for all, together we will stand or fall- the men in green sing loud & long- Dominus Pastor is our song!
As we strive to give our all, for our country & our school. We will hold our heads up high, and our banner proudly fly.
(ch) All for one & one for all, together we will stand or fall- the men in green sing loud & long- Dominus Pastor is our song!

my word I think was just sick a bit...
Falcon had some awesome war cries and the main field echoed as it was a bowl. St Johns have no idea of camaraderie. Falcon was a hard place but I wouldn't change it for anything. When I was in form 1 Heath Streak was full back for 1st team, and as big then as he is now. they beat every team, incl St Johns 79-0. Zim team that year had 11 falcon boys, they were the best ever.

Damn, I wish I was born a boy. I would have thrived in that rivalry. Girls’ schools are shit for war cries and rivalry.
The biggest insult for a girls school was the song by Ace of Base that went ..."All that she wants is another baby". We would be real bitchy and say that was Chisi's theme song.
Yip, pretty lame in comparison.
Boys school rivalry kicks arse!!!!

Well SOMEONE had to teach 'em about the birds & the bees, sort out their incorrect polarity (if necessary) & usher them into normal society...

If you think about it logically, all that is really achieved was a divided nation of teenagers...... People talk about strength and unity of zimbabwe, but when you look deeper you ultimately end up with splintered factions.
