In the late 60s we had a night time ambush on the Zambezi escarpment, 365 days a year. It was in the bush, right next to the main Chirundu Road. For some reason, the "Gooks" used to walk up that escarpment, time and time again, straight into the well prepared ambush, at point blank range.
Many a night, I lay there, gazing up at the stars, trying to pass the time until it was dawn. For us, each night, there were no "customers". I tried to imagine how the peace would be shattered, when the ambush was triggered. The crack of automatic fire, at short range. The pops of blinding flares. The shouts of commands. Sudden death.
Each night I waited, and nothing happened. At dawn, went "home" to Makuti, breakfast and an attempt to sleep in hot tents. Each night, we would be back again - watching, waiting .....
It kinda ruins your holiday to Makuti. :smiley36:
