Up for selection (Gallo)

Stephen Nell

Cape Town – South African coach Peter de Villiers faces a tough decision when selecting his flanks for the away tour to Australia and New Zealand. Will it be Heinrich Brüssow or Schalk Burger or both?

Burger's suspension for reckless play - received after the second Test against the British and Irish Lions - will expire on August 22.

He was included in South Africa's 27-man squad for Australasia and will be available for the first match against the Wallabies in Perth on August 29.

Wallaby flank George Smith who played against Brüssow on Saturday, praised the young Free State star for his impact made in Burger's absence.

"Which of the two should be chosen is a tough question for South Africa's selectors," said Smith.

"Heinrich is currently playing very well, but Schalk again brings something else to the game. It will depend on South Africa's game plan."

Smith believes Brüssow and Burger could be used in the same loose trio. But Juan Smith, who will in such a scenario have to stand down, was in good form for Saturday's victory of 29-17.

He did leave the field due to a leg injury and in the next few days it will become clear how serious the injury is.

The Bok selectors have meanwhile called up Burger, Ryan Kankowski, Gurthrö Steenkamp and Odwa Ndungane.

Steenkamp's return gives South Africa the option of having a second prop on the bench.

The Boks will next leave for Perth next Monday, where they will face Australia in the first of two Tests.

The second Test is on September 5 in Brisbane, after which South Africa will meet New Zealand in Hamilton on September 12.

South Africa:

Forwards: John Smit (c), Victor Matfield (u/c), Andries Bekker, Bakkies Botha, Heinrich Brüssow, Schalk Burger, Bismarck du Plessis, Jannie du Plessis, Ryan Kankowski,Tendai Mtawarira, Chiliboy Ralepelle, Danie Rossouw, Juan Smith, Pierre Spies, Gurthrö Steenkamp.

Backs: Jean de Villiers, Fourie du Preez, Jaque Fourie, Bryan Habana, Adi Jacobs, Ricky Januarie, Odwa Ndungane, Wynand Olivier, Ruan Pienaar, JP Pietersen, Frans Steyn, Morné Steyn.

That is a tough choice and I will be chuffed to see Schalk in as his days are limited with the age factor and a younger Heinrich coming through the ranks. But on the other hand, Heinrich did a shit load of damage and never got a yellow card . I would hate to be in the selectors shoes.

Brussow hands down, personally i'd put spies out on the wing move Habana to one of the centers (mainly because if he snipes and misses it's an easy try. and then put Schulk back as 8th.

if that doens't happen sadly there isn't room for Schalk to play in the team any more. Brussow has to start shimples!

Dude...Habana at centre? I know that's where he started, and I know that he has improved on his D a lot...but Nonu will run right through him and Smith right round him. Also JDV and Fourie are an awesome combo...

I wouldn't change the 15, but I'd drop Chilliboy, Bekker and Januarie from the bench, have Schalk and Kanko on the bench and have a specialist wing on the bench

F Steyn is only in the team for his big boot... defensively he is shaky and his tactical positioning in attack leaves big openings for counter attacks.. against the AB's thats a big problem as they are the best in the world at that (even though they f'ed it up in the last game)
I'd put Jantjies in there (is he over his broken leg yet?) he's much more reliable.. i suppose the problem would be that the boks would lose their long range points machine but then again with Morne in such fine form who needs a 35% accuracy ultra-long range kicker.

The big question is - Can Schalk behave himself? He is a liability some times!

schalk is a liability but that is what makes him a great player. I think the Aussies are taking a chapter from his book.

haha
cheap shot AS but thats OK.
the Giteau brain explosion was the only "dangerous" play the Aussies made and i dare say other than the occasional unintentional high shot thats the first time ive ever seen Giteau do something stupid like that.
On the other hand Schalk has earned his reputation from a list as long as my arm of dangerous and unsportsmanlike conduct on the field. the other Serial offenders are Bakkies Botha and Ricky January.

In the last match, I saw Bakkies put an elbow into an aussie player while he was on the ground after the whistle had gone, surprised he wasn't cited for that, in fact im surprised Botha isnt sinnbinned every match the way he plays, he's a bully but unfortunately also a talented player.

Schalk and Bakkies have taken the decision to be sin binned from the start of the game to give the other team a chance before they get on and get busy.

Heinrich is the man at the moment & I think Schalk should have to outplay him to get back into the team... I know the value of Schalk in the team, but at the moment, Heinrich is earning the side about 12 points a game in penalties at the breakdown & an average of 5.6 turnovers a game & 12 tackles... difficult to drop a guy making those stats EVERY wk when the team is going so well for a guy who is world class, but not on his best form... also, given the need for balance in the backrow, Burger is too similar to Spies & Smith who are both good ball carriers but not recognised 'fetchers' (I hate that word!) Well, PDV, Gary Gold & Dickie Muir have 'NICE' headache ahead of them! :smiley20:

Looks like they have sidelined Schalk for Brussow. Not a bad call as the no6 has not been sin binned for a while.
