Sydney - A knee injury has forced Australia captain Stirling Mortlock out of the rest of this year's Tri-Nations series.

Mortlock hurt his left knee in last weekend's 29-17 loss to South Africa in Cape Town and scans taken on Tuesday revealed he had suffered torn cartilage.

The 32-year-old has been ordered to undergo keyhole surgery on Wednesday, sidelining him for at least six weeks and the rest of the Tri-Nations.

Utility forward Peter Kimlin is also expected to be out of action for up to six weeks after damaging a nerve in his right shoulder on a recent development tour of Europe.

The injuries to Mortlock and Kimlin prompted the Australian selectors to call up lock Mark Chisholm and the Waratahs back Kurtley Beale to an expanded squad before the next match against New Zealand in Sydney next week.

Shame!
At least he doesn't have a broken leg, which is what they were saying they thought it might be!

I actually disagree for once.
he's a good leader absolutely and in the past has been a game breaker but he has been ineffectual in the trinations this year especially in the last game.. they need some freshness.
I say bring in Ryan Cross (doubt it will happen though) he has as good a running game and is more aware of where his team mates are and less likely to get isolated as Morto did in the last boks game. He's also a more effective tackler and will ensure folks like Muliaina and Sivivatu are covered.

I think he's put in his fair share toward the Wallaby squad. He may not be their star player but it's a real pity he's out of it now.
