Looking at buying a new digital SLR, the Canon EOS 500D. For the life of me,I can't find out whether it comes with a battery charger and battery. The Canon site doesn't specifically say what is included with the kit aside from a lens and camera body. And it keeps locking out on me when I try to send them an email.

Does anyone happen to know what comes with a Canon camera kit?

Ta very much.

Thanks, Mrs. W.

I had that much. What I don't know is if it is supplied when you buy a new camera. Normally, a battery & charger are supplied, but with Canon, who knows? At least Nikon tells you what is supplied when you want to buy one of their cameras.

Normally you get what ever is listed in the product specifications, unless it states optional

Digital SLR kits of this value always contain the battery and Charger as standard, as well as a manual on either CD or paper or both, along with a Strap, USB lead and if applicable a lead from camera to TV as minimum.

However not sure why you would want to buy a Canon ?

Go for Nikon, similar Money and a far better camera with loads more functions that you as a user are able to work with, again no issue with lens and if you get yourself a convertor, you are able to happily use the older nikon lens.

Swapped my Canon EOS for Nikon D80 a few months back, and it was the best move I have done in digital SLR for a long time.

Canon's after service and customer service / care Suck so much you could use them to hoover your carpets !

Just cause it says a Canon Can, doesnt mean it always will !

I did the price comparison, Iggy, which was the deciding factor at this point. The Canon is costing me close to half of what a Nikon D90 would. I originally was going to go for the Nikon, but after adding up everything (telephoto lens, bag, etc etc), the Canon was cheaper and other than that, pretty much of a muchness.

Either way, anything is better than the camera I have now!

A mate is bringing out from UK when he comes at the end of the month, so have to get it ordered (through him) soonest. You know, paying for it and all....

Did you have a look at the Samsung GX 10 and GX 20 ? ... Very Interesting Camera's and again Brilliant Specs and very competitive on Pricing, however the one thing that does appeal about these is the Weather Proofing on them. Worth a read up.

If you havent tried this site, then its worth a squizz : http://www.whatdigitalcamera.com/

http://www.whatdigitalcamera.com/equipment/compare.html

Just out of curiosity, what company are you ordering from in the UK ?

I did have a quick shufti at the Samsungs (and Olympus). The thing is this: Being in Zim, it is much easier to get stuff for Canon/Nikon than any of the other brands. Still F-ing expensive, but easier.

Thanks for the URL. Still looks like there's not much of a difference between the two cameras though.

The Canon G10 is better than the Nikon, It comes with all the accessories that you will need and you can get an underwater housing that will cost a bit more but will fit the G7, G9 and the G10. GBP450 for everything. Not to say the the Nikon is not good, I know a lot of people that use them and they are great but Canon is better.

the battery will defo be in the camera. you can check the package contents on sites like jessops or pixmania...

Iggy i have a mate with the D80, he's is soooooooooooo unhappy with me :)

I bought the D40 about a year ago, paid £380 for it, got 60£ cashback, paid about 30£ for a bag, spare battery 4gig card a few filters and sold it for 300 to someone at work as there isn't a low end camera on the market now apart from the D60, but add a second lens and it's out of the price bracket of most.

just got myself the D90 both mates with the D80 and the Eos 450D are extreamly impressed. i'm trying to get a good price on the sigma 70-300 apo macro lens

so far the D90 with the 18-105 VR lens has set me back 700£ i've found the Lowepro 200aw bag for 55£ and the sigma lens for 160£ just a few filters to go, and hey presto :) one circular and one uv job done :) (for a while)

I did read on a site that they were quite impressed with the Canon, but the swing vote was the kit lens and the HD video and live view.

drop me a pm or email and i'll show you the few pics i've taken so far if you like. trying to organise a photo shoot tonight with few mates that have the d450 and the d80

Yeah Iggy i have to say my EOS 1000D is tha BOMB! it is my first SLR but i did heaps of research before i bought it and as fars as Value for Money the Canons stand head & shoulders above the rest. the D60 isnt too bad for entry level and it has spot metering too but if youre not going to use it then why spend an extra $250 on it?

Gertrude can i ask why youre looking at the 500D in particular?

I agree with Biffon Gertrude. I have a 400D which has now taken over 8000 pics without a problem. I got rid of the supplied lens and bought 28 - 70 and 80 - 200 large aperture lenses which have been fantastic. Mind you both lenses cost more than the camera!!

AS...well, I don't dive, so an underwater housing would be a bit of overkill, in my mind. I suppose if I'm out fishing and the boat capsizes, it could be an advantage! :smiley36:

Biffon..Been looking at Canons for a while. Sprout just got the D90 and while she is happy with it, even she would have preferred the Canon. At the moment, I have a Fuji Finepix S700, which was fine when it was new. Trying to learn a bit more about taking good pics, and the Fuji just won't do what I want. It's more of a point-and-shoot camera.

Why the 500D? Seems like a good middle-of-the-road machine. I had a look at other models, but this one looks like it will do most things I want to do. Also getting a 70-300 macro lens to go with it, as I tend to do a lot of nature/game pictures.

It is a lot of money, Penny. And I DO love taking pictures. But the Nikon D90 was £809 all by itself!

Besides, I'm worth it! :smiley36: And haven't had a birthday or Christmas present for 3 years or so......:smiley9:

Gertrude,

make sure you get the sigma 70-300mm APO lens newer glass better quality photo, if you get ur stuff from pixmania they will price match.

Where are you getting the camera from? if your going through an airport dixons duty free i got my D90 for 694 instead of 799. the lens at jessops was 199.99, pixmania is cheaper but

http://www.microglobe.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?pName=sigma-70300mm-f456-apo-dg-macro-tele-zoom-lens-for-canon-eos-cameras&osCsid=df82dd688f66c5f0df8d9bb7dce74083

i've just bought the lowpro backpack from www.mymemory.co.uk (http://www.mymemory.co.uk) they are based in jersey which is VAT free so the prices are much lower i got the 100aw for 30£ i could have got the 200 for 35£ but i'm worried about the possibility of getting caught short at the airport with hand luggage and another bag.

don't forget to get filters, i also picked up to HAMA UV filters for 10£ each one for my nikon lens and one for the Simga

I have a Sea&Sea Motor Marine 2 and a TYB2 strobe that takes brilliant photos down to 50m

now that's a shame i saw a Sea and Sea on ebay and was soooo tempted to get it...

we are off to mauritus in december and i really wanted an underwater camera, i was so mixed up with the sea and sea the sealife the new pentax or the fuji or the olympus, i had another choice of one that clips on your surf board, but yea don't have one of those, and then another i can't find at the moment that was good to 40m...

i'd so love to take my D90 down but no way in hell am i risking it in the plastic bags they sell and can't afford the housings for them...

Thanks, but I can get a variety of filters here in Harare, relatively cheap, so I saw no point in ordering any. (erm, a UV filter for US$4 sounds cheap to me!)

Are you bringing them into the UK or Zims as if UK watch out for getting stung on VAT ! Only way around the VAT is to have the packages wrapped and clearly marked as Sample Products and Brochures No Commercial Value, this for some reason stops them from poking inside it ! Box within Box trick etc.

Ps, are they covered with an International Warrenty as well ? Only ask as was caught with a Camcorder from Singapore, Panasonic, full warrenty etc, needed to use it here in the UK and Nah ! Warrenty not valid as they are classed as " Grey Items ", even though it was a genuine product, has something to do with the export and resell area or some bollocks, so dont know what the standing is with US items.

They're coming to Zim. They will be genuine as being bought by another friend in the USA. He is coming to Zim and will bring with. As for warranties, no worries there. If it breaks, I'll send it back to the US.

England is far to expensive for electronic equipment.

So now is the perfect chance to actually pay nothing for your equipment, Your friend gets it insured via travel insurence, you arrange a Police Report from Zim stating what has been stolen ..... ( i am sure that is easily done nowdays )

He claims when he gets back, split the proceeds and happy days !

Everyone is a winner :)
