Argentina have been invited to join South Africa, New Zealand and Australia in an expanded southern hemisphere championship from 2012.

The Tri-Nations governing body SANZAR announced on Monday they had extended a conditional invitation to the Pumas to join them in an annual four-nations tournament after their breakthrough performance at the last World Cup.
"To have the Pumas, third at Rugby World Cup 2007 and currently ranked sixth in the world, join with the three top ranked international teams in world rugby will be exciting for fans, players, sponsors and broadcasters across our four countries and beyond," SANZAR chief executive Andy Marinos said in a statement.

"They play a different style to the All Blacks, Springboks and Wallabies and their inclusion will see the Tri-Nations evolve to be a truly southern hemisphere championship."

Although the invitation is only conditional and still has to be approved by SANZAR's broadcasters, Argentina Rugby (UAR) President Porfirio Carreras welcomed the news.

"This is a momentous time for rugby in Argentina and I would like to thank my board and everyone who supported us to reach this point," he said.

"We are very much looking forward to working with our partners in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa to secure our place in the best competition in world rugby in 2012."

CUP SUCCESS

The Pumas have been pushing for inclusion in the southern hemisphere's major tournaments since they finished third at the 2007 World Cup, ahead of New Zealand and Australia, despite not being part of a regular international competition. They were overlooked for inclusion in the southern hemisphere's Super provincial competition, which will be increased from 14 to 15 teams from 2011, but SANZAR officials left open the door for possible inclusion in the Tri-Nations.

They have also promised to offer places to the top Argentine players, who usually ply their trade in the rich European club competitions, in the Super 15.

The invitation is conditional upon a number of assurances the Pumas will field their best players and the UAR come up with a satisfactory financial package.

"With the significant progress the UAR has made in transforming rugby in Argentina and for making their case for it to be included in the Tri-Nations, we are confident that SANZAR, the UAR and the IRB (International Rugby Board) can work together to confirm the Pumas participation from 2012," Marinos said.

Under the proposed format for the Four Nations, each team would play each other home and away, giving all countries six games and a total of 12 matches overall.

The series would be played over eight or nine weeks from mid-August except in World Cup years, when it would start a month earlier and run over a slightly shorter period.

"I can't express the joy of myself and the team that has been working on this project to get to this point," Pumas World Cup captain Augustine Pichot said.

"We are delighted to have the chance to become a great rugby nation and to play in top-level international rugby and we are committed to working with SANZAR to meet the conditions."

Cool, a bunch of whipping boys. hahaha they haven't a serious snowballs chance in hell. Mind you, they would give the Wobblies a good run. Them what do we call the comp. 'Quad-Nations', 'Four Nations' or 'Panel the Pumas'

That is not quite 100% barto. There has been a lot of money available to the UAR for a while but they have been reluctant to go professional.

Argentina is currently the only International Rugby Board (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Rugby_Board) (IRB) tier one classed nation that has no regular competition, such as the Six Nations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Nations_Championship) and the Tri Nations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tri_Nations_%28rugby_union%29). Obstacles to this include international restrictions, Argentina's relative isolation from other major Rugby powers, and the fact that domestic rugby in the country remains amateur.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argentina_national_rugby_union_team#cite_note-Argentina_deal-1) However, an IRB conference held the month after the 2007 World Cup saw a breakthrough. The UAR agreed to launch a professional structure, with considerable support from the IRB, with eventual admission to the Tri Nations possible around 2012, although that timetable has been viewed by some as unrealistic. Despite several close matches, first time wins over the world's top teams New Zealand and South Africa continue to remain elusive as of 2008.

I think it will be most valuble for the argentinian players, to get more experience and coverage. I think it's good for the game to get more teams.

Most of the Argentinian squad plays club rugby in Europe, mostly France.

Fair enough...but I'm going back to the 95 RWC when they lost all 3 pool matches by less than 7, in 99 the made the quaters, they pushed the boks twice in 02...beaten most of the northern hemisphere teams since then (including France twice in 07)...bottom line is, the fact they are now going to be playing at a slightly higher level than they would be used can only be beneficial.

Now all they need is a S14 franchise

they played well in the first four games... the next one they were outclassed and never looked like winning :D and the last one couldve gone either way...
so 4 from 6 considering they were playing No's 2 & 3 in the world rankings is pretty damn good.

And to just gall me even more someone pointed out that the Boks are World No1, world champs, 7's champs, trinations champs and Super14 champs all in the same year and noone has ever done that before..

& to rub it in just a tad extra they're the Lions tour 09 champs too. I'd love to see their trophy cabinet! Looking forward to the wooden spoon play-off in a few hours time. I wonder if Henry or Deans will be getting their P45 . . . . . ?
