HELP
I have a 250Gb external hard drive and it keeps coming up with an error everytime I try to open it.
G:/is not accessible
error preforming inpage operation.
And when I try to disconnect it, it keeps saying there is a program accessing the device
Is there a fix for this for the techno challenged

Its corrupted ! You would have to try it on an external raid controller to make sure.
But pretty sure its knackered ....
Potential fix .. Kick it or Whack It.

disconnecting it's easy, just yank it out ;) if it's usb it won't mind to much, chance are it's not a happy disk, you can pop it open and pull the disk out and if ur lucky plug it into your pc, or get an enternal hard disk multi slotting bay (basically it's just a device to plug ur hdd in externally, if you are in the uk and would like to post it i can alway have a look and let you know.

I am usually the one shouting for computer help. You guys are great. You give the answers without the "attitude". I used to ask questions of this nature on a videographers' forum, where they are in a perminent race to see who has the latest toys.

when plugging in the drive can you hear it clicking at all? this is generally a clear sign of it being bust. or when plugging in the drive and when opening my computer it hangs.
if it all connects properly you can try turning the drive on it side (i'd suggest either doing this fairly slowly or turning it off again, this sometimes works, or at least long enough to get your data off it.

:smiley19: tried all the above - no sounds - tried both sides even upside down - even tried copying a doc to the drive - same error

ask a daft question, have you tried running a disk check on the drive? if you click start run, type in "cmd" without the " " and click on, in the dos box type g: and press enter (as long as G is the external drive) type chkdsk /f this should either start doing a disk check or tell u it will check the disk next time you reboot
if the data on the drive isn't that important you can always try and format it.
What brand is the drive?

lol no worries, i just have issues when things don't work right and insist on them being fixed, this is why i probably at one point in my life had 6 working laptops and 3 non working ones (that i'm innisting will work) ha ha ha my other half is just happy i don't bring home strays, but she does insist i move the laptops on... my family are quite happy :P
if ur data was important on the drive you can download an "un delete" package. just because the drive is formatted it doesn't mean that data has been deleted you might find that some of the data is still there.
