Hi, I have a Kia Picanto and today was told that when I brake the rear passenger side lights go off totally and when I take my foot off the brakes the lights come one.
Is some able to help tell me what my son should look at.
Thanks

Lics - do you also get interference if you switch on an indicator for one or the other side?
There are two possible things here. Either the wrong bulb has been fitted in one or the other clusters, eg a single instead of a double, or the second is possibly a bad earth to the rear light cluster.
The first thing to check is that the correct bulbs are fitted on each side. Some car manufacturers helpfully tell you on the bulb holder what power bulb goes where eg 12v21w (known as a B382 - single filament), 12v21/5w (B380 dual filament), 12v5w (B207) or 12v10w (B245) etc. Then you have to make sure you have the correct bulb in that socket.
Oh yes, sometimes if the wrong bulb is in the socket, when you press the brake lights the front side lights can come on too.
Get him to check that there is no corrosion on the plug pins to the light too. If there is, a dose of WD40 and a quick rub with emery paper should clear it off.
See here (http://www.click-parts.co.uk/files/nproduct.php?mk=21&md=494&x=40&y=6)for a visual description of bulbs
Or go into your local friendly workshop and ask them to check the lights.

MB thank you, I will get him to have a look tomorrow hopefully. Seems like its only 1 side and as the brake light bulb blew last week and we went a bout a new one, maybe that is the problem. I think I will have to see if I can find a friendly workshop to have a look. Oh dear.

Ah ha - I thought as much re replaced bulb. Chances are you have squeezed in a single and should actually have a double. The easy way to tell is if you look in the bulb holder for the bulb that was replaced, if you see two pins/connectors, you need a double and if there is only one, then a single. Good probability is you need a double.

Humm well when we bought it at Halfords was all they had, the connectors in the one we removed are round and the one we bought are not round. Would that make a difference?
Was a 12V 21W

Its a Kia .... You are lucky that any of the lights work :)
Did you put the right wires on the right connectors ? or does the unit pop out as one and you change the bulbs internally ?
If in doubt reverse it hard into a wall, that should sort it out :)

Shape of connectors on bulb base don't matter, but number does. Did the connector on the new bulb match those on the bulb that you took out?
A 12v12W is a single bulb (B382), but I think you may need a B380 (dual filament) 12v21/5W. Check to see how many pins in bulb holder.
BTW - if bulb holder says 12v21/4W then you will need a B566

No problem - definitely is a B380 then that you need.
If you were close by I would have popped over and changed it - but I think approx. 150 miles each way is a bit too much....

Yarr (Glyn) I have not had any trouble with mine bought in 2005 when my other car was eaten by a large green construction vehicle.
Goes well on a sniff of petrol and holds road well at 70km. Has a 5th gear and when I travel up to Cheltenham to visit my aunt get into 5th as I get onto motorway and never have to move out of it except if traffic holds me up.

See .... it cant even drink petrol like a normal car ! It has to sniff it !
Anything over 70kph and it would start to fall to pieces and I hope you didnt have to pay for the 5th gear as an optional extra :whistling:

We have a Kia Sorrento - what a car!!!! It is amazing - I have been told they have BMW engines. Well, ours is just fabulous. We use it mainly to tow our caravan - it has been voted "Towing car of the year" 3 years in a row - it never misses a beat, is fabulous to drive and is, for a 4x4, very economical.

Is that one of those jokes like how do you double the value of a Skoda?
Fill it with petrol!
