Hi all,

I discovered this site today after recieving an email from my dad with the sad news about Mike Mason. I wanted to find out more, so googled it and this was one of the pages that came up.

I was born in Zim and lived in Kadoma. My folks are still there, John & Jackie Kinnaird and Gavin & Theresa Otter (yes - 4 of them!).

I've been in the UK since 2000 - spent 5 years in London, now live in York - a beautiful but freezing cold place to live! Don't know any Zimbos in York, but have met a few Saffas.

I miss Zim every day and would love to go home.

Carly

Hi Carly - welcome to the best place outside of Africa.

We live very close to you in East Yorkshire (11 miles on the other side of Hull to be precise).

We all miss our home desperately but suppose we just have to make the most of it. All the mad but lovely people on this site keep me sane every day - I would be totally lost without them.

Welcome, sit back now and enjoy - hope to see you on here again soon xx

Jiggs - I'm sure my mom would agree with you if we talking about the coldest place in Zim - she used to refuse to go near Gweru for about 5 yrs after we left, but since coming to visit me here, she agrees York is the coldest! :)

:smiley36: Fortunately we don't live in Hull - I would not like to do that. We live in a lovely quiet village in the East Riding. I work in Hull which is not so bad, and it really is not as bad as people make out! We are looking to move later this year - not sure where we want to be - possibly Cheshire, Derbyshire or perhaps Staffordshire (where most our Zim mates live). I would love to move to Kent but it is so expensive to live south of London tho!

York is gorgeous - have made a few trips there myself in the past 10 years!

Thanks everyone ... I feel welcome already! Now if only my toes would thaw out, I'd feel like I was back home! :)

@Tricky Nicky - I've actually only been to Hull three times, once to go The Deep, and the other 2 times was for my Citizenship papers & Ceremony ... all the Poms at my work advised me to get a cab from the station to the building where the meetings were & back to the station - for my own safety. haha ... I did the first trip on my own, but the second wasn't too bad! lol

Tricky Nicky
02-17-2010, 12:53 PM
LOL - first I have heard of that!!!! I have lived here for 10 years and never had a single problem. We have some lovely theatres and shops here now - they have done a lot of work and made a lot of changes to Hull for the better in the last 10 years. :smiley20:

Oh dear ... looks like I started a war ... lets just clarify a few things:

The only good thing about Karoi is that when you're past it you know you're closer to Kariba/Chriundu.

The only good thing about Kwe Kwe is that its closer to Kadoma than Gweru so you know you're almost home and back to civilisation. (oh, and they did have a shop in town that used to sell the best cream doghnuts - can't remember the name).

Gweru is just a stopover point on your way to Bulawayo ... and to be fair, the home of Dutch Oven & Antelope Park.

Chegutu - is now little more than a bus stop. And home to some of my best friends! Chicks who's bulging biceps come from beating the cr@p out of "mommy's boys!" :)

Gotta go ... bye!

The only time I ever went to Karoi was on my way to and from Kariba - Twin Rivers was lovely - stopped there for beers before, and so was Spring Fever - nice tea and scones (or Koeksisters (sp))

The best was Buffalo Downs (was that in Karoi?????) Best biltong on the planet. That is my entire exerience of Karoi.

I was born in Bulawayo (best place ever - so laid back), left when I was 5 (but visited often - had the best parties in Bulawayo) and lived in Salisbury (then Harare) and then onto Ruwa and finally Kariba.

The best place ever was Kariba - I loved it despite the horrible heat and would go back there tomorrow if I could - I have 2 houses there :smiley19:

I was also born in Bulawayo, but left when I was 6 months old, so don't really remember, but I am sure it is the best place ever hey TN!

I lived in Harare until 2004 (moved to Crete for 3 months, then been in UK since then), but also spent 7 months in Kariba in 2001 - also loved it, but not the heat! My sister lives there and loves it!
