Last night, I was surprised to learn that our granddaughter, who lives in the US, looks forward to coming to SA for a Creme Soda. That is a "real Creme Soda", which is green.

I never knew that it varied, in taste and colour, from country to country.

Oh yep, it does vary a lot - and the makers vary too - they're not the same maker (Spar Letta) in other countries.

In the UK it's clear in colour and actually tastes like cream. (Cream Soda) In Aus it's pink and is called "Creaming Soda"... and tastes like cream with... um, lots of sugar.

SA Creme Soda is still the best hangover cure known to man.

Yup, what MonstaMan said...but it also comes in a redish brown colour and tastes poofy.

In Canada, cream soda is red-pink in colour.

Oh, and I think Stoney's Ginger Beer is the best cure for a hangover!!

Best if you drink it with a double shot of ouzo and ice.... also known as green mamba or green ambulance..... if there is no ouzo then double cane or vodka..... follow it up in the morning but on it's own and it cures your hangover in no time at all....then the next drink an hour later add ouzo and all is well....

Yep, red drink and green drink is what we called it as kids.

Yuk - never been a huge fan of either tho!!!

I liked it as a kid but ultimately it's just liquid syrup with colouring in it.

I do still quite like cream soda, and no, the pink australian version doesn't quite cut the mustard... so it is a little similar.
I get a can of the real stuff every now and then from the SA shop, just for something different.

or use both red and green to play robots.

Mazoe has always been the best cream soda IMHO. Versions made by Tacoola, Quench, Tru Juice, Squish Squash, etc were always pretenders to the throne. Even the SA brand Lecol couldn't get it right. It must be popular stuff for it to be on ebay:

Pennymac, is sarsparilla still popular in Oz? Vile, disgusting, horrible aniseed-flavoured cooldrink that it is!

My sister, who lives in the UK, just wrote of family in the UK. Sounds like everyone is sick, phycho or dieing. I replied:-

"Eish! What a load of heavy stuff. They should have all stayed in Africa and all would have been fine.

All is well here. The family are at the beach with the kids. They are coming here tonight for a braai. The kids will have crème soda, which they love and can't get in the US.

Things are so right here. ;-)

Lots of love to all

Howie"

I was only joking about the "should have stayed in Africa" bit. Well, there is an element of truth.

i had this same convo with opne of the girls at my work, she said that she hasnt touched cream soda (UK brand) as she thinks its too sweet and sickly, i went to the SA shop and got her to taste the spar letta cream soda, she loved it! also told her about grape fanta, she is going to the shop to buy them now!!! I have always enjoyed the mozoe drinks, although the orange would make me very weazy, but my fav was the mazoe peach!! Yummy!!

Love cream soda. Supposed to be lemonade with vanilla. When I last went to Zim, I brought back 2 BIG mixer bottles of the stuff.

Oh, and there is a butchers near me who sells a lot of SA stuff like Tennis biscuits, Oumas rusks, Creme soda (canned), Jungle oats, and some speciality meats too. The cans are about 90p each - don't go there too often or I would be broke and very likely toothless (the sugar content) by now.
