Bad News, I just got this email :(
It is with the most profound regret that we find that we have to announce the cancellation of the traditional Saturday outdoor Zimfest event that we have all come to know and love for this year only. As a result Zimfest London 2010 will now only feature Friday’s festivities as advertised.
Despite the best efforts of our team we have been unable to secure a venue for this year’s outdoor event having ruled out all viable options. The decision to move from the venue of the past few years was made earlier this year due to escalating costs that made Zimfest at that venue unsustainable. As a team we have a responsibility to the Charities that run and benefit from Zimfest to ensure that we are making the best use of the resources available to us. We also have a responsibility you our supporters and sponsors to produce a high quality, cost effective and enjoyable event. This was foremost in our minds as was persevered as long as possible delaying this announcement while the prospect of securing a venue remained realistic. Sadly his is no longer the case
The Show will go on: Zimfest 2010
As the saying goes when life hands you lemons, make lemonade! Zimfest 2010 will now only take place on Friday 3rd September with 2 consecutive events.
The first will be our newly introduced Charity, Social Enterprise and Business event “Connecting Zimbabwe to the World” at the Pacific Oriental in London Featured speakers include Knox Chitiyo from the British Zimbabwe Society, renowned cricketer Henry Olonga and representatives from our sponsors Econet Wireless. This will be followed by the first annual Zimfest concert “Zimbabwe Rocks” concert at the Clapham Grand featuring Mann Friday, Tinashe, Chiwoniso and many a host of other very talented musicians. Full details of the event and how to get tickets can be found at www.zimfestlive.com (http://www.zimfestlive.com/)
We are very excited about both events and believe that they will become a permanent fixture of the expanded Zimfest format. We would like to urge you all to help us continue to build Zimfest by attending both.
Making Lemonade, The future and Zimfest 2011
In every setback we look for opportunity. After 9 years of the same formula it is time for a change and this may prove to be the best opportunity to make some changes. We are already actively looking into options for Zimfest 2011 not just in respect of the venue but with a view to having it earlier in the summer when the weather is better. We are making lemonade. We have set up a page on our site for your comments, suggestions and feedback. We value your input and ask that you make this constructive and actionable in order for us to include them in our planning going forward. http://www.zimfestlive.com/?page_id=694 (http://www.zimfestlive.com/?page_id=694)
Thank you for your support over the past 9 years and we look forward to seeing you all on Friday the 3rd at the Pacific Oriental or at Clapham Grand or both! Let’s celebrate what has been achieved as we look forward to a brighter future for Zimfest and indeed for our community at home in Zim and around the world.

Zimfest has never appealed to me really - I hear mixed reviews every year - it is just so far away for us - that is the problem, but I suppose it is the same for those travelling from South to July Braai.
If they make it a three day event like July Braai I may consider it.
Just a question - where does the money raised from Zimfest go? Is it a charity? Does anyone know?
Eish, why don't they book a campsite just outside London and then we all can have a 3 day bender without having to try and get home each evening etc....

TN it is a charity and over the last 9 years they have raised £150 000 for various things in Zim like schooling for children and many other things.....

That is brilliant - I always wondered where the money went - good stuff.
Yeah, Doro, I think you are right - if we could camp it would just be such a good bender!!!!

Gonna miss it. Don't have the stamina for a weekend long bender (old age you see) but Zimfest is a good way to catch with mates that you dont see everyday (for a reason) but are good to have a beer or 2 with all the same before you move on to the next crowd. A weekend thing would just mean running into the same people over and over

But it does help that there are going to be heaps of Zimbos in one place at one time that weekend. Just make an arrangement that a few Zimbo's are going to meet up at XXXyourpickXXX and It can be leaked to every Zimbo I know, and a few that I don't.......

Are there independent auditors, who make sure that the money is accounted for and goes where it is intended?
Sorry if this is a stupid question.
.

They are a properly registered charity (charity number appears on the site and can be verified through the charity commission), so there would have to be a clear audit trail.

Chaela - ex thebottomhalf is organising a park picnic instead if anyone is interested in attending.

In view of Zimfest being cancelled this year, and many people have made arrangements to attend, we propose an informal gathering/picnic in one of the London parks.
Things to note:
* all ages welcome
* as it's a picnic you need to bring your own:
- drinks
- snacks/food
- picnic blankets/chairs
- rubbish bags!!
* entertainment provided by our fine selves, bring your own:
- aerobees
- kites
- footballs
- rugby balls
- blow-up sumo wrestling suits
- etc etc etc
You are welcome to invite others!

VENUE DECIDED:
St James's Park in central London, which should be easy for all of us to get to.

I recommend we meet at Spot 4 on the map in the link above. I should hopefully find a Zim flag that we can fly at the spot, so that we can all find each other easily.
"Spot 4" is "The Blue Bridge". There is food and toilets nearby. There is also Duck Pond for a bit of pretty scenery and ducks to feed! Family friendly!!!

Eish - London is far too expensive and not easy to get to - by the time you have either paid a fortune in train fares or congestion charges it just will not be worth it!!!!! Sad, but true. Hats off though to the person who came up with the idea!
