Well thats the first round to be played next year.

England do not have a bad group, Sweden maybe the only team keeping england off the top spot.

Group F is the hardest, Brasil, Australia, Japan and Croatia, damn they are going to be busy.

I would really love to see the next World Cup being played in South Africa.

Australia drew a SHyte round... but hey they are rated second lowest in the WC.

I personally think they should beat Japan and MAYBE croatia if theyre lucky.. They did draw with brazil last year so that too istechnically a possibility.

I suppose what im trying to say is that they should not be discounted at all.. they have some real talent there.

I couldnt handle it if the Poms won it. Imagine them holding the World Cup soccer and rugby. Hell we would never hear the end of it.

Woodward to take control of Saints?
Spotlight falls on Sir Clive as Harry Redknapp walks

Former England and Lions coach Sir Clive Woodward has distanced himself from the Southampton manager's job, claiming he is not ready to make the step up.

Woodward has been at Saints in a backroom capacity as performance director and has been immediately linked with the post after Harry Redknapp's shock departure at the weekend.

Now with Redknapp being tipped to return to Portsmouth, Woodward's name is in the frame to move up at St Mary's.

But Woodward told Radio Five Live that he didn't believe he was ready to take full command of the club.

"It is nonsense and not factual to say I have been given the job," he said

"It is up to the board but it is just too early for me, I have always said that. I do not think I am ready for the manager's role.

"I am learning and meeting a lot of good people like [Crystal Palace manager] Iain Dowie. Alan Pardew has invited me to West Ham to see how things work there, I just need more time.

"If I get that time I think I can do the job, but I have to learn the job first."

Harry Redknapp admitted he made a "monumental mistake" in leaving Portsmouth for Southampton a year ago, and the arrival of Woodward has been cited by many as one of the reasons for Redknapp's departure - a rumour he found hard to deny.

"As a bloke I got on with him, but I have to say the decision to bring him in was bizarre," said Redknapp of Woodward.

"The relationship between me and Clive was never going to work because there were too many people undermining the structure [Southampton chairman] Rupert Lowe wanted at the club."

Woodward insists he is sorry to see Redknapp go and maintains he had a good working relationship with the former West Ham boss.

"I was disappointed to see Harry go, he spoke to me on Thursday and told me what was potentially happening and I was sorry to see him go," said the former rugby man.

"Despite what one or two people have said, we got on really well.

"It took us all by surprise and I know the chairman was sorry to see him go, we all are. But we have just to move on from here.

"There will be a board meeting some time next week. The key thing is they take their time and make sure they make the right decision with the right people in charge.

"They have had a lot of managers in the last few years and they have to get this right.

"It is not a time to panic, but take time and make the right decision to move the club forward.

"Dave Bassett and Dennis Wise did a great job on Saturday and they will continue to do that."

He added: "I was grateful for Harry allowing me to come in and the coaches [Bassett] and Kevin Bond have been brilliant with me.

"I am enjoying what I do. The longer I am in it the more I have a role to play.

"I will carry on with what I am doing now. I am doing a lot of work behind the scenes and on football and I want to continue that. I am enjoying that and have a lot of backing at Southampton."

Woodward continued: "There has been a lot of reasons for people coming and going - I wouldn't say there has been mistakes.

"It is crucial now there is real stability and a manager must have a long-term contract to allow him to rebuild the club. You need real stability to get back into the Premiership.

"There's a lot of good things at Southampton, the players, the coaches, the academy, it is a great place to be.

"I hope who ever they bring in I can work with that person. There's a lot of people who will want the job because it is a good club and I am looking forward to working with whoever it is.

"If we make the right decision we can get the club back into the Premiership but at the moment we mustn't panic and keep a level head before making the right call."

One man who could be in for a quick return to St Mary's is Woodward's former sporting sidekick Simon Clifford, the controversial coach who only quit two weeks ago following a row with Redknapp.

Cant speak for the other blokes, but SA football is in a state of shambles...coaches are shyte, the governing body SAFA has too much dead wood in it getting FAT salaries & doing nothing (you know how the gravy train works in Africa) & the players are like spoilt children, throwing tantrums, fighting, drinking, raping & pillaging...& playing KUK soccer!

Wow!!! you guys have been busy on this topic, cant believe the hate you have for England.

England are ranked 2nd and will definitely make it to the semi finals, they have to beat Sweden and top the table to not play Germany who I think will top Group A. This will see them through to play Brasil in the semi finals.

With the talent coming out of Brasil, there is no doubt who will win next year, but just like when Ireland beat England, you never know what miracles can happen.

Pele fears England huh? They arent good enough to wina major event as they always fall at the last hurdle. Its English nature.

Besides one world cup, what else has English soccer done?

Besides David Beckham the rest of the English team play in England.

Robinson (Tottenham), Neville (Man U), Rio Ferdanand (Man U), Terry (Chelski), Ashley Cole (Arsenholes)

Steven Gerard (Liverpool), Joe Cole (Chelski), Ledley King (Tottenham), David Beckham c (Real Madrid)

Rooney (Man U), Michael Owen (Newcastle United), Peter Crouch (Liverpool).

Is it not proof that the English game has improved so much, that foreign player want to play in England. Italy, Spainand France pay their players the same amount, yet they all still flock to the UK.

Ya but the pound is stronger than the euro boet...the reason all those okes want to play in England is because the premiership is marketed & screened SO much better than anything else..."its ALL about the benjamins baby" as Puff Daddy / P Diddy or whatever the crap he calls himself says...

Most Valuable Substitutes Bench

For a game against Celta Vigo on January 9, 2000, FC Barcelona coach Louis Van Gaal created a sub's bench laden with over US$168-million worth of talent. Club captain Pep Guardiola, keeper Ruud Hesp, defender Frederic Dehu, Dutch twins Frank and Ronald de Boer, and 1999 European Player of the Year Rivaldo were all retained as substitutes,

Most Expensive Soccer Player

The highest transfer fee quoted for a player is a reported 13,033,000,000 Spanish pesetas (£47 million) for France's Zinedine Zidane from Juventus to Real Madrid on July 9th, 2001.

Spain is were the money and talent go, when they cant get in the pop over to England.

I think it time to bring this back into discussion.

England look to have the defence sorted but worries of striker like Crouch and injured Owen does not look promising. Owen should be back soon but lets hope he is back to 100% Owen straight away. Crouch cant score for Liverpool but Joe Cole is on fire for England and Chelski

Since when have footballers ever needed to be brutes, its a fast and nibble game and when you're light you don't mind falling on the ground every 5 seconds to win a free kick. The game is changing and no-one can stop it, this world cup is going to be the best one ever.

Sir Clive takes on English soccer

Friday July 07 2006
Woodward has the answer to England's spot of bother
Former England and Lions coach Sir Clive Woodward has waded into the row over England's dismissal from the FIFA World Cup by accusing the players of lacking conviction.

Another penalty shoot-out defeat, this time at the hands of Portugal in the quarter-finals, accounted for England's World Cup hopes.
Woodward, who is now director of football at Southampton FC, pinpointed the grim demeanour of England's big-name stars as they stepped up for their spot-kicks.
He also questioned the approach of their departing manager, Sven Goran Eriksson.
"I wonder if those guys wonder how much it means to English supporters," Woodward told the Sun.
"Like many England fans I was shattered by what I saw - the players' body language.
"At times there was no evidence of confidence."
Eriksson's record has come under scrutiny following his team's third successive exit at the quarter-final stage of a major tournament and Woodward has not been convinced by the Swede.
"Those in charge of our football should act. They should ask 'why does this keep happening?'," said Woodward, who has become something of a freelance sporting guru of late.
"Then they should identify whoever was responsible for not putting a stop to the rot and deal with him.
"I am not being wise after the event - but this could have been avoided.
"Former manager Eriksson and those around him did nowhere near enough to improve their chances of winning a shoot-out.
"Tournament after major tournament, we suffer the same shattering shambles - poor preparation and post-competition excuses. Well I, for one, am sick and tired of excuses."
Woodward believes that more time should be devoted to the art of penalty-taking and suggests that top-flight clubs should stage training shoot-outs in front of fans after games.
"That's five penalty failures in six - yet every England fan will tell you that, to win a World Cup or a European Championship, you will most probably have to win, at the very least, one penalty shoot-out," he said.
"More likely two or even three as you get to the business end of the competition.
"Brilliant finishing at the death prevented Germany and Italy going to penalties on Tuesday, while it took a penalty for France to sink Portugal in their semi-final.
"The big games are so often decided by small margins. And, like it or not, shootouts are part and parcel of the game.
"You can excuse a failure from the spot when it happens once, when the opposition score all five, or when their keeper has a supreme evening. But not five tournaments out of six.
"The extraordinary message I keep getting from coaches is you cannot replicate match conditions on the training pitch, that you won't create an ice-cool finisher from the spot just by practice. Rubbish!
"Try telling Tiger Woods he won't improve his putting by working on the putting green. Or Roger Federer that training is a waste of time.
"Here's my solution: After every Premiership match, teams should hold a penalty shootout and prioritise the use of England-qualified players.
"Make it realistic. Bring in a sponsor, get TV involved, ensure it is competitive and rewarded. Seek and find the elite penalty-takers.
"You'll soon find out who can take penalties under pressure and who can't. Even if those fans who stay to watch are very quiet — and it’s better if they are not — the players will not want to miss. They have pride and they won't enjoy failing in public.
"Result? More and more will start working on their penalty techniques.
"And clubs could begin whittling down the numbers to achieve a high level of quality. Those who can deliver and those who, under pressure, won't.
"We are in a professional sport that requires professional attention to detail.
"The disgrace of all this is that a key element, the sudden-death finale, has wrecked English dreams so often — yet remains a massive weakness."
