Guys and Girls lets give thisthread a new lease of life, the title is Good Old Bad Days, we have all written about the bad things, but there is one thing that will never change for most of us and that is home. Zimbabwe is my home and there are so manygood things to remember about the country.

I remember learning to ride my first bike (with stablisers) all the wayto Admiral Tait School. The weather was great always sunny on a Sunday. We were always with friends either at your house or at there's. After junior school came senior school and college, the best years of our lives, started going out at night and partying hard all night cause again the weather was great. Cars came and clubbing kept our weekends busy. Work helped pay for booze, petroland more clubbing. Then the shit hit the fan and suddenly I am sitting writing to all my mates from the other side of the world and a country with no sunshine.

These could be the Bad Days and we are just getting Old.

Oh hey, we were chatting the other day in Capetown (quite a Zim reunion actually!) about the fact that 99.999999999 recurring % of zimbos from ALL economic, religious & ethnic backgrounds had at least ONE item of copper in their home...a fire guard, a clock or I love Zim/ Rhodesia etc...anyone remember what you had in your home? Ours was a Zim shaped copper shield with engraved/painted info (Vic Falls had the falls logo, Kariba had a tigerfish & the Dam etc) i have started a new thread on this topic elsewhere...

The thing I miss about Zim is the mates you made. Friends from Zim are friends for life. I have been in the states for about 9 years now and I have made some new friends here, but they are nothing compared to Zim friends. Zim mates defend your honor when you are not around and they would take a bullet for you. No matter what you do they are always by your side.

I also miss going to Archies, it was about $10 to get in and then with your other $10 you could get about 3 vodka, lime and lemonades. And you could walk in to most places and you knew about 75% of the people in there.

I also miss that if someone pissed you off you could give them hell and scream and shout etc, and no one would be taken to court. Shit in this place you fart in the wrong direction and you are being sued.

I also really miss Zim cricket matches where people so many people were having a blast, guys were almost falling off the stands while shouting "hooo hooo hooters" at some poor girl walking past. You could buy as many nutty Choc Ices from that one ice cream guy who was about 100 but was at every sporting event. Man that guys was selling ice creams when my dad was at Prince Edward.

Zim will always be my home. I will always be proud to tell people I am a Zimbabwean.

I'm heading back to Zim after 4.5 years on Jan 17th for Honeymoon. The poor guy has no idea what he is in for. He hears stories of Zim, Kariba, Nyanga etc and thinks its a great place. But my goodness I'm scared of what it will be like now. The place just won't match the stories he has heard.

Kirsty
01-07-2006, 04:39 PM
There are a few things that I do not miss about Zim though.

Firstly, a persons reputation always preceeded the person. People thought they knew you before they even met you.And usually the wrong judgement was made.

And secondly, because Zim was such a small and close community, shit no ones business was their business. Everyone knew everything that was going on about everyone. That sucked.

biffon
01-07-2006, 07:32 PM
actually that was a good and bad point - it meant that if someone was a rip-off merchant they never got far.

and i loved going out and being able to party with 100 different people and know who they were.

it sucks here in aus cause if you go out, you'll be lucky to meet one person you know. If you go on a train everyone puts their heads down and ignores each other. it sucks...

heck its taken us three years just to get on speaking terms with our neighbours!

YOU know you are an ex-Zimbo if you can still remember Sally Donaldson's
voice on the radio, if you saw Grease four or five times and failed your
driving license at least once. If you still wear takkies without socks,
and horrify people by eating dried, raw meat (bilton). If you miss the
smell of rain on a hot, tar road, and a whiff of red stoep (verandah)
polish takes you back to Christmases by the pool and makes you long for
a great, bed-rattling, window shaking, earth tremoring,
all-kids-and-animals-in-the-parents-bed storm.

If you went to school in Zimbabwe you were taught real subjects like
history and grammar and you are probably still convinced day scholars
are pampered mommie's boys. You surely sang rude or witty words to hymns
in school assembly and you are still absolutely certain your A-levels
were harder than most first-year university courses today. And of course
you know, or still write to, someone who went to Prince Edward, Saints,
Falcon, Marymount, Peterhouse, Chaplin, Guinea Fowl or Gwebi
Agricultural College.

At your school, instead of being counselled, unruly students were beaten
- and it worked. And it was no use complaining to your father because he
thought this was a good idea. Now you bore or frighten your children
with harrowing tales of your deprived upbringing - when TV started at
17.00 hrs and kids were expected to ride push bikes to school.

Ex-Zimbos have their own dialect. Trafffic lights are robots, crocodiles
'flatdogs', while Koki pens are Neons to this day. What is this thing
called polystyrene -you call it kaylite - and 'muush' is still part of
your vocabulary - as is braai, kopje, fundi and lekker (translation -
barbecue, hill, expert, nice, and BTW, 'muush' also means 'nice').

If you are an ex-Zimbo you know all about playing in sandpits and on
jungle-gyms and you had avocado, mango, guava and paw-paw trees in your
garden. You still remember the taste of gemsquash with melted butter,
mealies and Mazoe Orange Juice, and yearn for bream fried on the side of
a dam, five minutes after it was caught.

You can still sing 'Ag Pleeze Daddy' and treasure Wrex Tarr's
Chilapalapa LP's. Of course you still know the words of 'Cockie Lobbin'
and all the Abba songs. You remember Jacaranda trees in bloom on Selous
Avenue and own at least one ivory, soapstone or wooden carving.

You are an ex-Zimbo if you or someone very close to you did wheelies on
the Enterprise Road outside Gremlins; lost some teeth, or worse, on the
rockslide at Mermaid's Pool; spat from your bedroom window at the
Monomatapa onto the pool deck, then ducked your head in quick.

You think the All Blacks are the Zimbabwe Tennis Team, and you recall
carefree, noisy days at Lake Mac, before the hyacinth took over.

Ex-Zimbos know how to drive on strip roads and most collected speeding
tickets while racing to make the Beit Bridge border post by 6 pm.
Remember the 'Coke' cans you collected on trips to South Africa, because
they were so cool, and all that enthusiastic hooting and waving when you
spotted another 'Zim' car while travelling 'down South'?

Old habits die hard so you still can't get your head around the idea of
throwing away a glass Coke or beer bottles, instead of taking it back
for the deposit. And you still find it hard to discard anything which,
in your humble opinion, could be fixed. You hate washing your car and
mowing the lawn, while ironing is something other people do.

It goes without saying that you've never carried your own golf clubs,
and you think golf carts are for weaklings. When you hear crickets in
July you immediately think of Christmas beetles and after an afternoon
rain you expect to see chongololos plus a 'few' flying ants. You will
never forget sitting for hours, sometimes days, in a petrol queue - and
not getting any.

As an ex-Zimbo you used to believe that people in England and the USA,
or wherever, had to be much better at everything than you were - until
you visited those countries and found they were inhabited by ordinary
beings living ordinary lives. So it wasn't too difficult to adapt to new
circumstances but it can be lonely.

Ex-Zimbos still think the most haunting sound in the world is the cry of
the fish eagle, and you long for the soft morning glow that brightens
the Mashonaland sky between 5 and 6 am, and highlights the Msasa trees.

Hope, far-flung ex-Zimbos, you all have someone who also remembers..

One bullet for him, but what about hos ministers & cronies? In that scenario, i'd rather stay with the devil i know than risk the possibility of someone worse...you have no control over events in an assasination, but you CAN control a revolution/ coup...MOST of the time!

describe the experience of being on a houseboat....

i'll try.

the thrill of leaving the harbour... the feeling of actually being on holiday!

the noise of the big diesel engines throbbing under your feet - everthing vibrating like mad!

the smell of the air- the wind blowing through your hair.

finally reaching that secluded spot in Palm bay or the Gache gache, securing the lines, break out the fishing gear- pack the eskies with ice and BEER!! and off to that secret fishing spot, the heat almost overbearing -- sweat dripping from your nose and running down your back (not the most memorable experience but hey its Kariba).

The "Moo hahahaha" of the hippo's up the creek near you and the fish eagles saoring high up in the sky

later as the sun sets you see the impala come down to the waters edge to drink and a lone Elle strolls past on its way to its favorite mud bath....

The mozzie coils come out and the smell of citronella permeates across the deck.

A cool shower off the back of the boat is an ideal way to end the day - while of course keeping a beady eye out for flatdogs.

After cleaning up - and a few sundowners - BEER and Voddies & coke.

The meal is brought out by the captain...

Fresh caught bream, pan fried in butter and garlic with lemon. succulent Salads and potato bake, some great cape wine..... aah heaven!

THOSE OLD ADVERTS OF OURS !
>
>"What a day - What a headache" said my wife. "Take Anadin" I said
>hopefully. For after action satisfaction I had my pack of Lexington on
>hand. I felt irresistible. After all, I had the Colgate ring of
>confidence, and being on the right side of the money barrier, was now
>a Rhobanker. I had just bought a sweep ticket (*) after a tip from
>Schhh.....
>you know who.
>I was feeling confident, having a sizeable collection of Macey's green
>stamps. I had also heard that my debt to Greatermans had been cancelled.
>It's true, I heard it on the radio - You Pay No More At Greatermans.
>All those in favour, raise your yellow plastic Dishwallah and say "HAU
>!"
>I was on my way to Scottish Jewellers when I saw a hot chick named Olivine.
>(Clearly the Best.) She was the only one who knew where I could get my
>Bosal Exhaust fitted. As I lit her Kingsgate cigarette, she whispered
>"The Rich Okes Get All the Cherries Hay." I soon cheered up when I saw
>my friend Honey Beat, who said "I like it, I like it, I love it" but
>maybe we'd better 'bata - the bata movement'... to get some new
>vellies. On the way I had a coke and a smile
>
>"Pocket a Packet of Pascalls" murmured Hortense the Hippo, while giving
>the kids their Royco Soup. "Soup makes you big like a giant" said one.
>"I hate it" said the other. Give me Ngwere Nwere Sadza - every body
>sadza with some Cashel Valley Baked Beans (pleeeeze) cleared the air,
>although with a skin like yours I'd recommend Phillips Milk of
>Magnesia. (Yeah, get the big
>bottle.) or some Lanoline milk.. I was feeling out of focus, so decided
>to have a Quick Click at Clintons before my meeting. "Nyore Nyore
>Zimbabwe Furnishers" sang the Chairman as he Tabled his report at the
>meeting. The sun was relentless, so I applied a coat of Turtle Wax to
>my swanky Peugeot 404. The Chocolate Jungle Juice was running out, so I
>Sold My House Through Fox & Carney, and gave Biddulphs a Buzz. I
>decided to phone Rixi Taxis 60666, as I knew I'd Never Get Away Without
>an Exide, so I paid a visit to ABC the leading Auctioneers and bought a supersonic radio.
>
>
>PS I"m sorry to say, I completely forgot to Speke to Stanley Gordon
>about the Bakers Union.
>
>PPS Beef Eaters make Better Lovers remember !!
