Kiwi fans may snub Super 14

By Rupert Guinness
September 15, 2006
THE New Zealand Rugby Union's order that 22 All Blacks miss the first half of next year's Super 14 is set to ignite a revolt among New Zealand fans.
That is, if a poll among supporters of the Crusaders, the team to be most affected by the directive, reflects the mood of revenue-drawing rugby supporters across the rugby-mad country.
The poll, by the Stuff website, found 65 per cent of Crusaders fans would consider not attending the Super 14 champions' games if their All Blacks stars were not playing.
Under the directive that was created by All Blacks coach Graham Henry with a view of resting his players for the World Cup, the Crusaders would be without seven international stars.
They are Richie McCaw, Reuben Thorne, Chris Jack and Greg Somerville from the forwards and backs Dan Carter, Aaron Mauger and Leon MacDonald.
"A lot of people are disappointed by the decision," the Canterbury Rugby Supporters club president Dick Tayler was quoted as saying on the website.
"What worries me is that some people might think they will give the games a miss because key players are not playing.
"We have to be careful because there are so many other things people can do and they will think about giving the first half of the Super 14 a miss."
Henry's enforced rest order has already affected the Hurricanes who will lose most of their pack, including Jerry Collins, Rodney So'oialo and Chris Masoe.
Hurricanes coach Colin Cooper has reportedly been working overtime looking throughout the region for replacements rather than fall on his last option: the draft.
His headache and those of coaches with New Zealand's four other Super 14 sides will be more painful than those experienced by their counterparts in Australia, where likely World Cup Wallabies will be rested for one week.

Well boys, the bottom line is they are tryin something new & good luck to 'em...i think it'll be FANTASTIC for the game (super 14 that is) in NZ terms for 22 new guys to have to step up (imagine what that'll do for their depth!?) & it gives SA a chance to FINALLY win a Super rugby tournament! (Transvaal won Super 10 in 1995, but that doesnt count!) Think if the 'Tahs had some discipline & werent such chokers, they might be able to sneak it next yr too...hmmm...let the games begin!

yeah i did "get it" but seeing as there was an element of truth in it i posted the real story as well....

Tiger is right and although it will give an unrealistic impression of the state of rugby in NZ it will be good for their player pool in the long term!
