Thanks, everyone, for the warm welcome. Biffon, I'm in Thurgoona which is rural New South Wales - way across the country from Perth. Still finding Aussie way of life a whole lot different but settling in. Been here long?

haha - i think he is quite proud of the random ballbag flash!

Been here about as long as you Nyala, Perth is a great spot though the aussies are tough nuts to crack when it comes to fitting in.. still on the outer mostly but im sure eventually we'll settle...

Nyala

I'm finding the same thing but ...I've chosen this to be my home from home so I guess I gotta make it work. I was told that Perth is the most laid-back city in the world. One day I'll visit. Keep cool, mate.

yeah but these Perth drivers are Maniacs!! and shouldnt be allowed in cars... but other than that theres nothing to do and thats why everyone is always so chillaxed! :D

Welcome fellow new south welshwoman?! Bit of a tongue twister hey. Aghhh these aussies are crazy. Hope you enjoy the country. Still some great people around especially in the country. Some really good values and honesty. Enjoy the change. Hope you settle in. I know you will. Southern hemisphere people get on.

Rae - that is a beautiful name...wow

Aboriginal - I've found a few SA's here and they are great - sanity savers!!!

Raevoyn

I wanted her to have a little bit of Africa in her name, so Savannah was put there, Lily, because I believe every women should have a flower in her name somewhere, and Piper .... well, that was her mother's choice, she loved the TV show Charmed, so I guess you can work it out from there ....

Nyala
11-14-2006, 02:14 PM
That is so cool. You deserve a rep.

dallas
11-14-2006, 02:16 PM
I love the name Piper from charmed too but if I had had a girl Dan would never have let me name her that!! You really are a nice dad, you get a rep for that too

Bianca
11-14-2006, 02:23 PM
That is very cool - you are a nice guy! Rep for being so nice!

Raevoyn
11-14-2006, 02:42 PM
Awwww guys! Thanks for all the cool remarks, you'd better stop before my head explodes .....

Just a thought for all you Perth-siders ...... It's the closest place to Africa in Australia and it's the furthest away from (most of) the Aussies in Australia .... I reckon that's the only reason you're there .... I don't blame you one iota!

Bianca

That's where I would choose to live!

I'm on the other side of the country - Albury, New South Wales. We are looking into the WA mines - apparently you can make bucket loads of cash coz they're pretty isolated.

biffon
11-15-2006, 12:39 AM
the mining industry is the bane of my life right now
also trying to get an IT job at one but its like pulling teeth
- its also the reason why Perths property market has shot through the roof, median house price is now 450K thats 25K more than canberra and 50K more than NSW..
i cannot afford a home loan with prices that high unless i get a 2x1 and thats just not good enough.
but otherwise Perth is great

We've just bought a three bedroomed house here for $172 000. so It won't be worth our while to sell up and get another at those prices...or we could just rent...what are the rents like?

biffon
11-15-2006, 06:55 AM
rents are high as well - we are lucky in that weve been in the same place for 4 years now - still only $210 a week (4x2 home with big back yard)
most people would charge $300 a week min for the same place

Raevoyn
11-15-2006, 12:31 PM
Ous, for all the shit I give Aussies and Australia, I actually miss the place! I had a great place on the coast, nestled on a headland looking out to sea, in a lovely little not-so-quiet town called Airlie Beach!
Fuckers! Hate them for kicking me out!
I hope Ireland Dick Australia this weekend!
sorry for my outburst .... I'm sure you understand!

Nyala
11-15-2006, 12:47 PM
'Course we do.....We have been looking for an investment property on the coast somewhere - preferably QLD or north of Sydney. There are some beautiful homes along the coast - sounds like yours was lovely, Ev.

Welcome Nyala. Seem to be quite a few Zimbos in Aus now. Most of them seem to be in Perth though. The ones i know anyway

Raevoyn
11-15-2006, 01:18 PM
My Recommendation is "Shute Harbour" or even between Shute Harbour (Shutehaven) and Airlie Beach, perhaps Jubilee Pocket, it's in Queensland, near Mackay, Bowen, Proserpine, etc (I've included some maps). There are development plans for Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour and the property prices in this area are going to sky rocket in a few years. I would have bought there myself, but for a little technical hitch!
Here are a few websites:

Thats great, Ev - thanks. We'll look into it.

Raevoyn
11-15-2006, 01:43 PM
I might hate them, but i still loved where I was living! I will always promote that area and community! The locals there stick together properly! There are a few of our lades and ladettes that have businesses there too. It's mainly a tourist area, focusing primarily on sailing - however there are other businesses there too.

Nyala
11-15-2006, 02:23 PM
I gotta agree that the local communities seem to stand by their people. I had a bad experience at my workplace once and the guys really supported me. My altercation was with an Aussie so I did appreciate their support. They're generally good people.

What gets me is that the people in the offices have some sort of power hunger thingy that gets to their head, they have no compassion and just love the fact that they can wield their power! When I first arrived in the country, I was detained at the airport for over 2 hours, being searched and questioned. Even when I was kicked out, I was at passport control for hours whilst they went through all my records ... again for the umpteenth time!! It's ok though, I know now that when I go back they won't have a leg to stand on. The Mayor of Airlie Beach has written a personal recommendation for me, as too most of the business owners!
It just flaws me that they preach about family values all the time, and then they send a father away from his daughter for a simple (albeit valid) mistake, when she's 2 and a half, knowing that he will not be able to see her again until she's almost 8. Come now, them fuckers need to learn to practice what they preach!
Alright I've said my piece, I'm not going to bang on about it again!

Nyala
11-15-2006, 02:53 PM
Thats a real rotten thing to do and yes, it does seem to be double standards happening........I'm glad you have the recommendations and the community behind you. It's also a good thing to rant every now and then - releases pressure.......

Bottom line is be positive and stand your ground. :)
