I have the movie and i watched it last night!! Bloody excellent!! Leo does an amazing accent, the best i have heard an american try!! my whole concept of him has changed, very good acting!! It is a very sad movie, and to think that it is true that there are still 200,000 child soldiers is heart renching!!

I saw it a couple of weeks ago - BRILLIANT! Very sad! A definate must see for all Zimbo's! The thing that shocked me the most was the fact that the Diamond Companies (deBeers etc) have millions of diamonds stored in vaults so they can stop them flooding the market in order to keep them rare! It's disgusting!

Watched it the other night and dont mean to disagree on purpose but I thought it was a piss poor effort on Leonardo di poofta's part. Sounded half Jamacian, half SA half pomm half Aus etc etc etc. If that is how they portray a Zim accent then those stupid wanker hollywood types dont know their arse from a bucket of cheese. Good Movie but what a con of the Zim accent. I challenge anyone who watches it not to burst out laughing with his "Impersonation"

I have to agree that his accent wasn't brilliant but otherwise the movie was fantastic. On the whole I think it was a pretty solid performance on Leonardo's part - he got the message across!

i still think it was good, the only thing that kept bugging me was the way he kept saying "ja ja" not "ja" once like we do!! i loved the way he said "my bru" !!

The movie was very good and for an American trying to put on a Zim accent I though it was pretty well done..

So many articles keep saying it's a South Afircan accent he is putting on - I wish they would get their facts straight! Even here in the UK in the local antipodean mag (TNT) they say it's a SA accent!!

Not wanting to be argumentative, but what is a Zimbabwean accent?

Okay, from an English speaking perspective, I get that a Zimbabwean accent is not nearly as strong as the South African. But surely an accent is strongly influenced by the environment you are brought up in.

For example, if you were born in Zimbabwe but both your parents both had English accents, it’s very probable that, to a certain extent, they would influence your speech and accent.

I know that personally I’ve picked up a mishmash of accents and mannerisms during my travels over the years, and I can’t claim to have a truly Zimbabwean accent. In fact, based on my accent, a lot of Zimbabweans have assumed that I am not actually from Zimbabwe, let alone born and bred there.

Oddly enough, it’s mostly non-Zimbabweans who pick up my accent. But usually they assume that I’m from South Africa.

My point being that although you might live in Zimbabwe all your life, you might never quite sound truly Zimbabwean (whatever that is).

I noticed that Leonardo De Cappuccino did drop his accent on a couple of occasions but overall I don’t think he did a bad a job. My only criticism is that at times erhaps he tried too hard.

Still, his accent probably sounds a lot more authentic than mine. Sigh…

Good film btw.

I think its a great movie and has made alot of people talk but it sends out the wrong impression about zimbabweans/south africans.

Yeah, but just remember that he left rhodesia and lived in SA where he was in the army and lived most of his life?! In a way it does paint a nasty pic of Zimbos/Saffas, but as people we can prove people wrong by being nice and polite to others, everyone is an individual, and we cant all be blamed for what an individual does wrong, but we can can show that we are the most amazing fun people in the world!!

True I guess - unless you are a full on Afrikaans Saffa you don't really distinguish that much between the accents.....

I have just watched the trailer and I think he does a better job with the accent than Val Kilmer did in The Saint. He was supposed to be Suth Af-rikun. Poor attempt!!!

Ah man the movie was great, and I think LDC did his best with the accent. Sally you are so right, he was a Rhodesian and then moved to SA. But the accents are very similar.

Shift sweetheart, that was technical lol :) But well said. A friend of mine that is pukka SAfrican, went to the states and now sounds like an American, but then chats away to her Mom in Afrikaans, as if her accent was Safrican, lol!! Funny that your surrounding influence your speech. Apparently I am well spoken and very english, but now and then you hear my Zim accent - what is up with that??? I cant hear myself, so I have noooo idea. To me, I sound Zimbabwean!!!

The story line was played brilliantly by him, and that made up for the oooopsies with his accent sometimes. He tried to hard I think....

I saw the making of the movie and Leonardo said he really struggled to get the Zim accents. He did spend time with some zimbos learning the slang.

i think it was a brilliant film after being told it was a crap attempt i really admire the work he put in to get the accent down... IMHO he was very close... sometime sounding a little forced though!

I am busy watching it and it is awful!!! It is so disturbing. Iknow I sound ignorant but it terrifies me. I dont want to know of things like that because I can not do any thing to help or stop it. It makes my heart bleed for all those families.

I watched it on Friday and thought it was brilliant. My other half wasn't quite so thrilled by it all probably cause he can't sit still for more than 10 mins and the film was rather long!!! I read in one of the free London papers that when he first tried the accent people said he sounded like a Jamaican rather than someone from Southern Africa, so he hung around some locals in Mozambique to work on the accent, I thought it came out ok and loved the way he said 'Alright'
