From Galeforce's website.
I made these last night and they turned out bloody marvelous BUT for gods sakes dont tell the doctor you made these.
Ingredients:
250ml (1 cup) self-raising flour
5ml salt
50ml cold water
Oil for frying
Method:
Combine the self-raising flour and salt in a mixing bowl.
Add the water and mix to form a fairly slack batter.
Heat sufficient oil in a shallow pan. Drop spoonfuls of the batter in the oil and fry until nicely browned on the outside and done inside.
Serve hot with butter and Golden Syrup

Just in case anyone is willing to put in the time to produce the original vet koek, this is the recipe. A lot of work, but so, so worth it and divine served with curried mince.
2 cups lukewarm water
2 teaspoons sugar
2 teaspoons yeast (or one little packet)
5 cups flour
2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons oil
1. Add the sugar to the water then stir in the yeast
2. Sieve the flour and salt into a mixing bowl
3. Add the oil to the yeast mixture
4. Add the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients and mix with a wooden spoon
5. Work the dough by hand, adding more flour if needed, until sides of the bowl are clean
6. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead thoroughly until firm, elastic and no longer sticky (about 10 mins)
7. Shape dough into a ball, place in a clean mixing bowl, cover with a cloth and leave to rise until double in size and springs back when pressed (about 60 mins)
8. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface, flatten to knock out air bubbles and knead to make firm
9. Cut of pieces, shape into balls and deep fry in fairly hot oil until golden.
Drain and enjoy!!

I actually find it easier to make it the night before, then leave it to rise in the fridge for 24 hours. The same recipe can also be used for a pizza base - after knocking it down, add chopped garlic to make it really yummy.
