View Full Version : Should The Rugby World Cup Be Held

Once A Year or maybe every two years instead of every four?
Take England for example, they've been able to call themselves the official World Cup champions for the last four years. The reality however is that they've been thrashed pretty consistently ever since that fortuitous drop goal which gave them the trophy in the first place.
I guess the point I'm trying to make is that four years is a very long time to 'talk the talk', particularly when you've barely been able to 'walk the walk' since then.
Do you think that perhaps a World Cup Champion team should at least perform to a reasonable standard during interim years,in order to hold onto the title?

I agree shifty, that's the most intelligent, insightful thing I've read in years. Here, have some rep. :smiley2:

Don't know about intelligent and insightful, but I don't think it's a completely kak idea...
I think that the lower teams would benefit from playing the stronger nations on a more regular basis.
We'd have to revise the current calendar and get rid of a few tests though - too much of a good thing is bad...

i think tri nations is held too close to the end of super14 for one. I think it should be held as part of the Spring/Autumn tour..
eg: have SA, NZ, Argentina & Aus play each other twice in Aug-September then Play two Northern Hemisphere teams in October November.. have a home/away rotation each year.
that leaves March -June for Super14 and any one-off Tests in July.
December - March = R & R and Northern Hemisphere domestic series or whatever - who cares about the northen hemisphere rugby anyway! :D

i think the two shifty's are talking cr*p.It is all about the world cup...players and teams should gear themselves for it, a world cup once a year just means too much rugby, the season is tough enough as it is (just look at the tests with the northern hemisphere teams - whoever has just finished their season often looses because they are jaded.) I do agree with two things though, England are and were sh*t and secondly the world cup holders should only be called the world cup holders for the year that they win it, four years is the split though.

4 years is good as it provides a good build-up for the fans, having it every year will dilute its status as the Second Greatest International Sporting Event.
on another note..
I have a feeling that Sevens Rugby is going to become quite a poweful entity in its own right... not that it isnt already but it provides the same thrill with the same basic game structure. There are at least 15 nations that on a good day will be able to win a competition ... I say "watch this space!"

I agree, once a year would be too much particularly if it's going to be at the expense of all other tournaments.

Now that's the best idea I've heard all day.

Certainly from a spectators point of view it's an awesome event. Where else can you see so many people supporting so many different countries in one stadium. Bring it on, I say! Went to Twickenham for the London Sevens last year - what an absolute blast!
