So picture the scene - the world is planning a test tour of Venus, Mars, Pluto and Jupiter. :smiley36:
We really need to make this a grand slam, so who would you pick for your World Team and why? You can only have 22 in your match day lineup, but the substitution rules have changed and you can sub for as many times during a game as you want. They have to be current players, not retired or dead.
Mine would be -
1. Tony Woodcock (NZ)
2. John Smit (SA)
3. Carl Hayman (NZ) / CJ van der Linde (SA)
4. Matfield (SA)
5. Bakkies Botha (SA)
6. Schalk Burger (SA)
7. Richie (come in from the side) McCaw (NZ)
8. Pierre Spies (SA) Bob Skinstad (SA)
9. Gregan (Aus) / Dwayne Peel (Wales)
10. Dan Carter (NZ) / Fred Michalak (France) / Johnny Wilkinson (England)
11. Brian Habana (SA)
12. Gordon D'Arcy (Ireland)
13. Brian O'Driscoll (Ireland)
14. Sivivatu (NZ)
15. Chris Latham (Aus) / Gavin Thomas (Wales) / Percy Montgomery (SA)
Aliens are skinny, so this will be a running game. They'll probably also be kicking a lot from the pressure we'll be putting on them, so we need Percy's kicking game to be on in return. If that fails, we've got the line-breaking ability of Gavin Thomas and Chris Latham, who are both hard as nails. Johnny Wilkinson will be taking penalties, conversions and the ocasional drop goal is expected. Matfield and Botha have to be the best 4 and 5 in combo in the world. John Smit is in because he's in the form of his life (well, was in the S14) and his leadership. Woodcock and Hayman are going to destroy the skinny alien scrums. Number 9 was a difficult choice but went with Gregan for experience, rather than speed. Schalk Burger needs no replacement, and neither does Richie McCaw. Pierre Spies is as strong as an ox and can actually run, and Bob Skinstad will be the Super Sub in the last 10 or 15 mins. Habana and Sivivatu are obvious choices. O'Driscoll and Darcy were also picked as a combo.
Yes, I have too much time on my hands. :whistling:
Oh, by the way, my team's name is the EngWel BlackWallaboks.:smiley36:

eish...i honestly didnt even realise that...however it was a hard call leaving mortlock out the 1st 15, let alone the 22....but i figured that 21 should cover 10/12 and 22 wing/fullback....

Happy to know I'm not completely smoking my socks since - give or take a few - most of us agree on the basic structure. Midfield to backline seems to be where the most differences of opinon lie.
The aliens are in deed shit, I hope they're ready for us!

agreed!!!
tigers pick of Robinson on the wing is scary though
Munya what the hell????
Robinson is as bad as Paulse, sure he is a pocket rocket and magical to watch when he has ball in hand but hell he cant tackle and he cant catch a ball either!
Paulse, Robinson, Russell & maybe Iaone are made of the same stuff. Although i think Iaone has made great improvements in his defensive game this year.
Anyone notice how the Aus & NZ media have been whipped into a frenzy in the last few days.... the hype is as thick as treacle!!!!
i just hope its not an anti climax and we have a blowout on the night!

I like your selection there Tiger. I think the decision to add Rodney So'oialo is a good one. He's generally one of the great unsung heroes of NZ rugby. Not sure I'd go with Gregan though. He's good but there are better, I'd have probably have gone with Byron Kelleher.
Also I noticed that no one included Luke Watson in their selection. Have you considered the posssibility that you might not have a say in this matter? :naughty:

At the request of the opposing teams, Luke's been excluded from all inter-galactical tests because they're worried that he might "use the force" a little too much. :smiley36:

I just felt Gregan was the most level headed of the 9s available at the moment- Kelleher, Pienaar, Januarie, Weepu all have brain implosions that could prove disastrous in a pressure situation...

Absolutely. I would have picked Pienaar for his sidesteps, very handy against agile aliens, but he's very much prone to the odd stuff up.
Januarie would cost us about 13 yellow cards...
Kelleher and Weepu I must admit, I haven't watched much...

That's a fairly good assessment actually. As it turms out Kelleher's performance a couple of weeks back was very average. Gregan is also very good at playing the psychological game. Opposing halfbacks were always in for 80 minutes of being jostled, harassed and yapped at by George - as was the ref.
In fact when it comes to controlling the whistle, George Gregan rivals Sean Fitzpatrick as the greatest player to ever ref a game. :smiley36:
