Cheetahs to Play at HK 7s By Paul Munyuki
The Zimbabwe Sevens side — the Cheetahs — are expected to take part at the International Rugby Board World Sevens Series Hong Kong leg.
Previously, the Cheetahs were taking part in the Dubai and George (South Africa) tournaments and it is their improving performance in these two competitions and other African tournaments that has seen them getting the invite for the Hong Kong tournament.
ZRU received an invitation for the Liam Middleton-coached side for the Hong Kong tournament from the IRB late last week.
"Congratulations to the Zimbabwe Rugby Sevens team on their continued good performances in 2007. I am pleased to confirm that Zimbabwe have, once again, been invited to participate in the first two tournaments in the IRB Sevens World Series 2007-8 and Hong Kong tournaments," read part of the letter.
The IRB Sevens circuit consists of tournaments in Dubai, South Africa, New Zealand, USA, Hong Kong, Australia, England and Scotland and runs from June to December.
It features 16 of the world’s best sides, and currently the core teams are Fiji, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Samoa, Australia, Scotland, France, Tunisia and Argentina.
The IRB Sevens 2007/08 series is set to kick-off in Dubai where it will be staged from November 30-December 1 before play moves on to George in South Africa the following weekend while the Hong Kong event will be played in the last weekend of March next year.
