What do you think of the proposed changes that will probably come into effect next year? Do you think they are a good idea and will speed up the game?
One of the advantages of rugby is that it takes all body shapes and sizes to make a team. With that in mind do you think that these new rules could eventually result in turning traditional rugby teams into a bunch of 6ft, super light, superfast athletes ?
The most important variations are:
TACKLE AND RUCK
1. Players must enter through the gate.
2. Immediately the tackle occurs, there are offside lines.
3. Players are permitted to use their hands in the ruck.
4. Anyone playing the ball at the breakdown must be on their feet.
5. If the ball is unplayable, a free kick is awarded to the team not in possession of the ball when the tackle took place.
6. Most offences at the tackle are now sanctioned with a free-kick. A scrum option is still available for all free kicks.
MAUL
1. Defending players can pull down the maul.
2. Players joining the maul must do so through the gate.
3. If a maul becomes unplayable – a free kick is awarded to the team not in possession at the start of the maul.
4. The "truck and trailer" is permitted when breaking away from a maul. It is not permitted in general play.
SCRUMS
1. The offside line for backs (except the halfback) is 5m behind the hindmost foot.
LINEOUT AND THROW
1. A quick throw-in can be thrown backwards.
2. No maximum number of players in the lineout – teams do not have to match numbers. 3. The receiver must stand 2m back from the lineout.
