Burger ban reduced
Schalk Burger’s four match ban has been cut back to two matches.
Burger still won’t be able to play against England on Friday, but he will be available for the quarter-final against one of Australia or Wales.
Burger’s appeal hearing lasted two hours in Paris on Thursday morning.
Bok coach Jake White had hoped for a complete turnaround of the original suspension.
All Blacks flanker Jerry Collins meanwhile labelled the suspension of Burger as unfair and said 10 players could have been cited from the match involving the Boks and Samoa.
“It’s a long way to come for your tournament to end early, but what can you do? Like Schalk, you go in low and then clip him high. It’s just the luck of the draw who gets picked up and who doesn’t.
“It is like having someone looking over your shoulder. You have it in the back of your mind, but the game is brutal and these things happen.”
Collins, like All Blacks captain Richie McCaw and Australian loose-forward George Smith have had their fair share of yellow cards because of the nature of their position. But for the most these guys have never been singled out for dirty play.
Burger, in particular, is not the brawling type and he doesn’t throw punches on a rugby field.
Burger, since his test debut in 2004, has received five yellow cards, but all of them have been for professional fouls in slowing down the ball illegally at the ruck.
The judiciary acknowledged his disciplinary record and the fact that there had been no predetermined intent to hurt his opponent, yet he was given a four match suspension.
Samoan flanker Vaeluage pleaded guilty to a dangerous tackle, but argued it was not intentional and he was given just a one match ticking off.

a yellow card should have been the end of it.. it was clearly obvious that he was going for the ball and just followed through.. it was silly, possibly dangerous but not intended and noone got hurt.
methinks there are other forces at work here...

surely the citing comission should only be for incidents not picked during the game...how does a player get banned when the ref didnt feel what happened justified a yellow?
biffon
09-14-2007, 08:58 AM
same reason how the american got cited for the spear tackle..
again although it was dangerous It was obvious he had lost his balance before the player was even past the horizontal and did not have any control over how the tackle progressed from that point.. I think he should have been red carded sure and maybe a 1 match ban but 5? wow thats harsh! even tuqiri's spear tackle last year only got him 2 matches and they were suspended too.
Burgers tackle should have been a yellow card, Vickery's trip should have been a yellow card.

Got to add that the Ireland Vs Georgia was the best game I've watch so far in the tournament... was really hoping the Georgia would pull it out of the bag and win... being a front row myself I found their physical rolling maul and constant pick and drive stratergy was sterling.
Good honest rugby.
Now bring on Samoa Vs Tonga... now your gonna see some crunching tackles.

have 2 say mighty impressive, feel sorry for ireland they were such a force this time last year, i feel the gorgian's were a bit to much pack and not enough line, if they can pull some fancy moves or even the opposite kick down the field they could have a good chance... heck if they had a runner like habana that masvillie character can sure boot that ball...

From a women perspective:
The AB's have not been playing to their normal standard and seem to have been falling slightly - this could partly be due to all the penalties against Jerry Collins for rough play etc.
The Wallabies seem to have lifted their game with a new coach and new young players...looking at Drew Mitchell.
The Bokke seem to be moving forward in leaps and bounds...playing great rugby.
...so, at a punt I'd say the final will be Bokke and Ab's....with the Bokke taking the cup.
(This from someone who unfortunatly does not get to watch all matches due to work commitments)

thats insulting comparing the wallabies with the french!
have a little more respect for the team that beat down your asses in the last 4 world cups!
that being said NZ were looking simply awesome yesterday .. cant say as much for the Saffas though... they bloody nearly lost their game!
The wallabies were always gonna win their match but disapointing injuries and sloppy defence cost them.

I didn't think they were that awesome against the scots...they threw away at least 30 points against a very, very sub-standard scottish side...

Watch and learn.
The Wallabies are slightly above average and shouldnt be mentioned in the same sentence with The Springboks and All Blacks.
Lets talk about choking in the Rugby World Cups. The Ab's have been the best side consistantly for the last couple of decades and havent won in 20 years.
They're a fine side when not being challenged, but get terribly flustered when it doesnt go their way,
Trust me this world cup will be no different.
