Chans have you ever read these three but you have to read them in order.

1. A child called it
2. The lost boy
3. A man called dave

They are all sequels, true story of a boy growing up. (pretty sad)

I like anything by Clive Cussler. Real boy action books with a brilliant story line. Most of his books are about Dirk Pitt who works for the National Underwater & Marine Agency, (NUMA) a 501C3 non-profit organization that dedicates itself to American maritime and naval history.

Probably the best book i have read by him is

http://www.numa.net/images/covers/inca_gold.jpgInca Gold. First published April 1994 as a Hardcover by Simon & Schuster.

the movie "Sahara" was based on one of his books.

Im sorry but im more of a Scifi reader... not into drama & epic novels
although i have read a great many action adventure & techno thrillers ..
Such as Tom Clancy, Wilbur Smith, Clive Cussler, Michael Crichton, John Grisham, Robert Ludlam
My favorite book by far, has to be "the power of One" by Brice Courteny - the movie doesnt do it justice

Have read the Dave Pelzer Books Wayne - his brother also wrote a book, which is just as heart wrenching! I really would love to hear the mothers side of all that! It's unforgiveable isn't it?

That's just it though isn't it? They are sick - mentally ill! They can't possibly be able to understand human emotion or pain and suffering! 99% of the women on this planet wouldn't be able to torture their worst enemy like that - let alone their own child! I think the bigger crime is committed when the authorities stand by watching.........

I prefer fantasy books, would recomment stephen kings dark tower there are five books in the serious it is some pretty mind bending stuff. And if like action like sword fight david gemmel is good, and his sex scenes are pretty graphic.

I read a book called wet breams which was good too would recommend it cant remember the author but it is about growing up in zim and all that really good book

Has anyone read any of the books in the "#1 Ladies Detective Agency" by Alexander McCall Smith about his African lady detective, Precious Ramotswe? Anyone from Zim/SA/Bots/Sothern Africa as a whole should read them, particularly if now living elsewhere in the world, as just to read the descriptions of the people in the books, the way they speak, think & behave just transports you straight back into the way of life back home - thoroughly enjoyable! Biff, the whole time you were watching 'Sahara' were you just shaking your head at Matthew McConaugheys impression of Dirk Pitt & laughing your arse off at Steve Zahn's Al Giordino? Man, what a pile of shite! I scheme some books or series of books just shouldn't be made into movies if that's how they'll turn out.

Im busy reading "Dry Water" by Tammie Matson
Good so far and really nostalgic!! :)

Hmmm...5 recommended books...in order...
1. A tie between 2 'guy' books i recommend are: Wild at Heart- John Eldregde (a Christian author who writes on mens issues- his wife co-authors a similar book for the ladies titled: Captivating) & Iron John- Robert Bly (a philosopher/ psychologist who deals with mens' issues)
3. The Brumbies- the first 10 years. FANTASTIC reading if you are a rugger fan or have interest in development of professional sport franchises.
4. The Art of War- Sun Tzu (applicable to all aspects of life)
5. A Brief history of everything- Ken Wilber (Philosophy meets psychology, meets religion, meets spiritualism, meets biology, meets chemistry, meets pysics, meets astro & nuclear physics, meets logic, meets myth & legend, meets history...)

Chants you little ripper this was an EXCELLENT idea! Feel like i have partaken in my first book club! :smiley36: My ex used to go to book club & i ALWAYS wondered what it was all about...

I belong to a book club - we all enjoy reading so it's a good way to have books recommended and to read things we wouldn't usually read! The main idea though is to get together once every six weeks, talk about the book for ten mins and then get drunk and gossip! I love it!

I have read most of Paolo Coelho's books and can divide them into two categories. Ones I detested and ones I absolutely adored!

I highly recommend The Alchemist, By the River Piedra, The Devil and Miss Prymm, Veronica Decides to die, Eleven minutes, Maktub and the Zahir.

The others did nothing for me and to be honest I did not finish most of them. Just weren't my cup of tea. I have not read Brida or the Gift yet.

I am looking forward to reading Be Like A Flowing River. Is it any good?

I think we've all read Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code (if not - must read) but another not so popular one of his which I think is his best book is Angels & Demons (excellent)! Also Andy McNabb for those into SAS/ Spy/ war stories... "easy reading" (Bravo two zero author)! Riley 'aint bad either!

Always liked WS books particularly the Southern African related ones. But the Egyptian series, apart from the very first, I only read out of loyalty and expectation, and was disappointed with them. I vaguely remember that some or part was actually written by his then latest girlfriend.

Currently trying to track down H Rider Haggard books at the library / charity book shops. Read King Solomons mines (excellent), She and Ayesha when I was younger. He actually wrote about 60 odd books - long way to go to reading them all....

Arthur Conan Doyle? Rudyard Kipling? Or more recently, Frederick Forsythe?

When we were in Zambia, we had shelves full off books, and sadly sold or gave most of them away. Didn't for one moment regret giving away my sisters Mills and Boons novels.

Hey Pennmac, have you read The Four Fires by Bryce Courtenay, who's South African born, by the way. I thoroughly enjoyed this read, and it was something you could really get your teeth into.

A Thousand Splendid Suns too, by Khaled Hosseini, was an awesome read, especially being written by a man about women and their trials and tribulations in Afghanistan. Next up, when I can find a copy, will be Kite Runner by the same author.

Shantaram - Gregory David Roberts - was another good read, and if Johnny Depp is to play the main character in the movie, it can only be a winner.

One book I haven't been able to find here is The Elephant Song by Wilbur Smith. :(

Anyone out there in the diaspora want to send books out to Priya, sprout and I? *G*

The Power of one" really put me off Bryce Courtney. For a South African, it was so inaccurate as as to make it rubbish. I have always wondered about his credibility since then.

*sigh* I live in hope that what with all sorts of other things available again in Zim, books will come along soon as well. I've read ALL the Wilbur Smiths so many times now that I can almost quote them.

Even the flea market doesn't have much in the way of second-hand books any more.....
The flea market really is not that bad, you just have to get to know the guys there...they been pretty good about finding books/swapping with me.
The Twilight books sound quite good (from the way you all carrying on :smiley17:). Lord of the Rings/Harry Potter or am I looking at Buffy?

You have to admit though Wilbur Smith's "Eagle in the Sky" is worth quoting; that has to be my all-time favourite WS book!

My mate wot lives in Haarlem - Holland tells me that her local library has asked people to donate english books which they want to send to Zimbabwe. She took down 5 books and the lady told her they have had a brilliant response and the first load of books has been packed and ready to go. I hope they find their way to the flea market.

Went on safari with Wilbur a few times... very intelligent fella... asked questions about everything.. I was still a greenhorn gobby at the time but still remember the time fondly.. read most of his books although have struggled with his more recent ones... Still adore the Sunbird and Elephant Song (for the uninitiated - the first being about a mix of Sinoa cave and Botswana... and the second all about Mana Pools and the Valley...)

Come on... pretty much everyone likes to hark on about it as it was filmed at St John's and most folks from there were in it (bit like White Hunter black heart and King Solomons Moines with a VERY young Sharon Stone bimbling around Elphants hills before it was rebuilt and in the rainforst at the falls...)

As far as good books... for those who have worked in the bush, I know it is about Botswana but look up "Whatever you do, don't run" by Peter Allison.

Another well thumbed book of mine is:
A time of madness by Robert Early.

Have a seriously eclectic taste in books.. and find authors are so rude.. they either go and kark it half way through a series or write the next installment far too slowly that I forget the previous volume..... :whistling:
