OK, so I've been thinking about how many words from other languages have been incorporated into the English Language, and it's spawned and idea in my already very twisted brain!

The rules are very simple, Each posting in turn reveals a foreign language word that's been incorporated into the English language, with the Language of origin and it's original meaning .... obviously, for there to be a pattern, we start at "A" and once we reach "Z" return to "A" .... it goes without saying that there should be no repeats ....

(Wikipedia gives good definitions for most of them ...)

I'll start ....

Adiós is Spanish for "goodbye". Literally translated, the word is the contraction of "a" (to) and "Dios" (God), from the old Spanish phrase "A Dios vais" ("You're going to God", meaning to the Kingdom of Heaven), which appears in the novel Don Quixote (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Quixote). It is roughly equivalent to the English phrase "Godspeed" or "Go with God" ("Vaya con Dios").

Let the games begin!
